Re: New fan belt, now have red light

Just drive it yourself for 6 months, prove the reliability, and then you get to keep her :) Unfortunately not an option now as I really need a very reliable car to get to work. Due to the nature of my job I can’t afford to run the risk of not getting to work on time and I can only have room for so ...

Re: New fan belt, now have red light

So now it’s all fixed, I’m looking for a last pitiful advice please. Apart from the for sale section on this website, where is the best forum to sell the Moggie? It’s time for her to move to a different owner. I’d hoped that it would be something for me and my family to enjoy but my wife won’t drive...

Re: New fan belt, now have red light

Yes, I cleaned the contacts. If I’ve changed the dynamo and the regulator I don’t see why it would be charging too high. I’ll check it with another multimeter but I’m not going to worry about it too much. I’ll never get to drive it at this rate! A friend of mine reckoned it might be a problem with t...

Re: New fan belt, now have red light

Finally. It seems to be fixed, for a while at least!
Red light goes out as soon as it starts. No smoke or nasty burning smells.
Charging at around 13.7v at tickover, it goes up to 16 with increased revs.
So, fingers crossed.
Thanks for all of your help guys!

Sorry to go off topic but......
I am intrigued that you mentioned motorcycles, what sort do you have. I am also a long time bike nut.

Phil
Bonneville and Thruxton. I’m fine with bikes, never any problem.
It’s cars that are outside of my comfort zone!

Re: New fan belt, now have red light

Club spares will alost certainly have either NOS or known good second hand original control boxes that are liklely to be better than anything being made today, and probably cheaper too. Give Bryan a call or an email, details in Minor Matters. Doh!! I’ve already ordered one. Oh well. Noted for futur...

Re: New fan belt, now have red light

Wow. Top info, thanks.
All the more reason to change the control box for now. If I ever have any more problems with the system I’ll definitely fit the alternator conversion.

Re: New fan belt, now have red light

At tickover, it's charging about 13v.
It's the fact that it stuck and almost burned out the dynamo and set the car on fire that worries me, so for about £22 and postage is a small price to pay for reassurance!

Re: New fan belt, now have red light

Right, I'm officially confused. Gone back out to the car today, the contacts Points have opened on the right coil in the contact box. I disconnected the fan belt, connected the battery and Dynamo and pushed points closed, the Dynamo spins. Feeling confident so I connected everything back up, started...

Re: New fan belt, now have red light

So, as the control box points are now in the closed position on the right hand coil, it seems that the battery is trying to power the dynamo as a motor, hence the burning smell and smoke because the new fan belt is stopping the dynamo from turning. I've probably fried the brand new dynamo now. So, r...

Not helpful 🙁
Sorry Phil. 😔
Having a bad few days with this. **^^%#~~* car, and I had a sense of humour failure.

Re: New fan belt, now have red light

I do not think that PGP100 was being off hand in his comment but being realistic. The fitting of an alternator mod kit is so easy and as regards the wiring alterations it is described in detail on this web site. Whilst anything can be unreliable I have never had any problems with alternators on the...

That will be a big help.
I'm also working over the BH but if I haven't got it sorted, and I don't see what else I can do now, I'll PM you for beginning May.
Thanks.

Re: New fan belt, now have red light

If it was trying to run it as a motor, would I hear some sort of noise when I connected it? When I tried the motor test with the old Dynamo, as soon as the contact closed, it spun. The contact is now closed, where it wasn't before. If I knew someone who had a spar control box, I would. Unfortunately...
