Re: Problems getting firm brake pedal with silicone fluid
Dot 5 used to be recommended for bikes as well, but then it was discovered that it doesn't absorb moisture like Dot 4 does. So you could get pockets of water in the system causing corrosion. After that it was back to Dot 4 and no more problems with rusty joints! One thing I've found when bleeding br...

A series 998cc engine on Ebay
Hello, Please accept my apologies if this is the wrong forum to post this on, but I don't normally post on here. However, I've just come across an ad for an A series engine, 998cc that has around 90,000 miles on it and is on Ebay for £199.95. The ad no. is 184274623770 and the engine is in Bournemou...

Re: Engine rebuilt - blowing oil
Quick question, were the bores honed as well as being bored when the rebore was done? I ask because reboring the cylinders will leave them with a work-hardened surface. This means the new rings won't be able to 'bed in' very easily. That's why it's normal practice to hone the cylinders as well. Honi...

Re: Automatic choke/twin choke
From memory, when I had a manual choke on a car I used to pull the choke out and twist the knob a quarter turn one way or the other. This locked it in that position till I wanted to reduce the amount of choke. Then I simply twisted it back, pushed it in a bit, and twisted it again to lock it in posi...

Re: Faulty fuel pump? Options??
Hello there, When I had my first mini, back in 1968, there was a problem with the fuel pump. It often stopped working, but that's not surprising because it was fitted to the rear subframe, right in the way of the nasty stuff that gets thrown up from the road on a rainy day. I found that tapping it o...

Burnham28, where are you based? I have boring equipment and the necessary mics for measuring bore size and wear. I'm based in Borehamwood, which is North London, if you're nearby then I can come and measure the bores for you.

Re: The test for bedded rings in a newish engine
Niftyrodman, I agree about the oiling up bit, it does make a difference, but you won't get a true reading of the compression till the engine is up on running temperature. Then you stop the engine, take out all the plugs, and do the compression test on each cylinder in turn with the throttle wide ope...

Re: COMPRESSION RATIO - PISTON HEIGHT
The head gasket will add some clearance to the piston height, however, you have to make sure that the valves don't touch the piston at TDC, and you can only do this once the head is on and properly torqued down. So be careful turning it over when you first bolt it down.

Hello,
I can see why you used Cord piston rings, and why they wouldn't have broken. Here's a Cord catalogue page that clearly shows the rounded outer edges of the rings, that won't hit against the rounded edge of the wear ridge.

Re: Engine in bits for a rebore-anything else worth doing?
ndevans, The reason your top rings have broken probably has something to do with putting new rings in old bores. I've attached a picture to this post that shows you how the wear ridge in the bore is slightly rounded at the top. Meanwhile the top of the top ring is square. The square top edge is slig...
