Re: Timing chain replacement
Thanks very much Phil. The kit didn't come with any shims, but the gears appear to be lining up OK without them. If I did need some however, any idea where I could get them? I'm still having trouble getting everything lined up correctly so I am going to try the split chain (from the mini site) that ...

Re: Timing chain replacement
So it has taken me a while to get around to re-trying this job (getting it wrong the first time put me off for a while!) but am going to give it a go this afternoon. As previously discussed, it looks like I've ended up one tooth out of alignment with the new chain. I noticed the first time around th...

Re: West wilts Mmoc?
Hi Gavin, I recently joined this branch and have been to a couple of meetings. It's a small but friendly group. Yes should be a meeting at The Bear tomorrow, 8pm, hope to see you there.
There is also a Facebook group to join if you are on there.
Cheers, Tom.

Re: Timing chain replacement
So it's taken me a while, but I finally got this job done yesterday, and put the front of the car back together. The good news is there is now a lot less noise from the timing chain. The bad news is that, due to my usual 'two left hands' garage skills, I think I might have upset the timing whilst do...

Timing chain replacement
Hi everyone, I'm having a go at replacing the timing chain on my 1000 with the duplex one. Partly to (in theory) reduce noise, but also just to give me experience working on the car. I'm using the kit that comes with the new sprockets, chain, gasket etc. As always with my posts, this all comes with ...

Re: Horn sounding spontaneously
I was able to - I think - rectify this problem this evening. There was an exposed bit of wire that was shorting against the inside of the steering column, which I think was the culprit. It turns out that the supply to the horn push button enters the steering column beneath the indicator stalk area, ...

Re: Horn sounding spontaneously
Thanks very much, both. Where exactly does the wire get into the steering column? Is it around the cover where the indicator stalk is, or does it go right through to the base of the steering column?

Horn sounding spontaneously
My 1000 has developed a very annoying (and MOT-unfriendly) habit of sounding its horn by itself! Before jumping to conclusions about cars having minds of their own, or Stephen King-esque demonic possessions, I think the most likely reason is that it is shorting out somewhere. The horn generally soun...

Re: Under heating
Apologies for digging up an old thread, but due to a house move I have only just got around to doing anything about this problem. Anyway, I replaced the thermostat and that seems to have solved the problem. The engine reaches full operating temperature now, according to the gauge. As the engine was ...

Re: Looking for some project ideas
Thanks for the ideas guys. I should have mentioned I have been greasing the various nipples around the car, but I have not done anything to check the valve clearences - will certainly read up on that. Rebuilding a rear axle, and later an engine, sounds like an excellent project, would certainly love...

Looking for some project ideas
Hi everyone, I've had my Minor (a 1098cc saloon) for 7 years now. Although I have always liked Minors, the main reason for buying it was to try and learn a bit about maintenance and restoration, having nothing at all in the way of background on this. In that time I have learned how to do the followi...

Under heating
Hi folks, I've got a quick question I'm hoping you can help with. A couple of years back I fitted a water temp gauge, and generally the temperature seems to sit somewhere around 90C. However recently, it never seems to get anywhere near that. Is this anything to worry about? The only thing that obvi...

Re: Rear wheel bearing complications
Just wanted to say thanks again for the advice on the wheel bearing, which was correct. I finished the job today, and the obstruction did turn out to be the remains of the old oil seal. Once removed the new bearing fitted without any trouble. If you're reading this because you've having the same pro...

Rear wheel bearing complications
Hi everyone, I'm hoping to get some advice on a job I'm doing on the moggy (1000 saloon). I'm a complete amateur at this, and feel like I have two left hands sometimes. But I like to give things a go (whole point of getting the car really) so here goes. I'd noticed a rumbling noise from the rear of ...

Re: Fitting a spin on oil filter (daft question alert)
Update - conversion kit now fitted, looking forward to speedier oil changes ahead! The conversion was really easy, even for a relative newcomer to classic cars like me. I did have the radiator and front panel off the car at the time, for an unrelated job, which made it a bit less fiddly - especially...
