Re: 1958 2 door, rolling resto

Aye up, Yesterday i fitted the 731 cam to my car. I did this as i wanted to change the cam chain, so as i had the cam, thought it would be daft not to give it a go. Cam is good as it didn't require me to change the oil pump again. First impressions are good. Idle appears to be ok, not noticeably lum...

Re: 1958 2 door, rolling resto

Well, i was impatient, so i made the glovebox components. If i didn't have the speaker i would definitely do away with the glovebox and mount the tacho on a board, as it is a right pig to fit. But fit it does. The tacho is completely enclosed/boxed in, so looks relatively neat. It isn't perfect, but...

Re: 1958 2 door, rolling resto

Aye up, Car is running well still. The last 2 weeks i have been doing a 25 mile commute on the motorway for 3/4 of the journey. The 4.2 diff pulls nicely, it does miss that pep away from the lights, but once revs are up, it holds them well, so worth it for me. I certainly wouldn't want anything like...

Judging by the filter mounting holes, i would say HIF44.

Looking down, if a HS carb (as opposed to HIF), clockwise will richen it.

Re: 1958 2 door, rolling resto

Hey Sleeper, It does appear that way yes. I have blocked those two "unfiltered inlets", and where i have drawn in black, have cut it out there. This means that air is now filtered going into the housing. I have also drilled some extra holes in the front. I located the filter within the hou...

Haha, i hadn't thought of it, but it is uncanny!

Re: 1958 2 door, rolling resto

Well, this is the air filter all hooked up. Did all the modifications this morning. It appears to have quietened down the K&N noise, which was the aim. It won't be to everyones taste of course. Also, the wiring was stripped when i had to decipher what all the new wiring did, awaiting fitting som...

Hi pgp,
Yep, pretty cheap off ebay.

These are the bits i bought, people have suggested getting dust boots too, which i can imagine would be good for longevity.

Re: 1958 2 door, rolling resto

Hello folks. I have been busy doing lots of little things to the car. Nothing too major, hence lack of posting. I have fitted a Mini RC40 exhaust system to my car. It is a 1.75" all the way through now. Welded on a new piece to the twin outlet Ital downpipe to mate up to it. It needs a little f...

A good suggestion, but no, it does this with ignition kit fitted and removed.
Any other suggestions?

Distributor vacuum

Hi folks, The dizzy in my car is a Lucas 25d. The vacuum advance unit has been replaced at some point. A suck on the pipe holds vacuum, but it does release slowly. Is there anything to do on this? Historically i have always found them to return with a little *thud* when you release/stop sucking), so...

Re: Horn bracket

I have the same bracket in my '58, so i don't think it is a dynamo bracket (unless they used the same bracket for both for cost).
I agree with the fabricating though, should be an easy enough piece to make up with a drill and a grinder.

Re: reversing light

Holy thread revival!

Been having a look at this and thought i'd give it a go myself in the coming weeks. I have bought myself a couple of microswitches to play with.

A great idea that i hadn't seen before and appears to be more accurate than a lot of other aftermarket types, kudos 🙌👌

Re: HIF38 possible fuelling problem

How does the fuel pump sound going up the hill? Does it tick more or less than normal? It could be lacking in pumping capacity, thus struggling a bit going up hill (assuming the throttle it quite wide open when going on the incline). But it could be lots of things, not discounting your float also. T...

Re: Traveller Tuning

I agree with Panky regarding the rockers. They can have a good improvement, but for the cost, certainly better mods out there. The maddest A series i have had was a Mini 1098. It had been rebored with Hillman Imp pistons to 1215cc, 940 head, Kent 286, maniflow inlet and full exhaust, HIF38 and K&...

Re: Traveller Tuning

Hi Panky, Cheers for the update. The general consensus on the Mini forum is that a 1.625" exhaust is the optimal size, with 1.75" being the general preferred due to availability. For my build, i have had to juggle a compromise between cost/performance/aesthetics. To me, my current system a...

Re: Traveller Tuning

Panky, i didn't want to suggest it as i hadn't done it myself before, but that is what i would do also. Slight thread hijack... My own Minor is a 998cc, 940 head, 1098 cam, HIF38 with K&N cone filter, AAA needle, Ital twin outlet exhaust manifold going into a 1.25" exhaust system. Could the...
