Pressed steel rocker - How it oils the pushrod and valve tip

I did a total engine rebuild last year but didn't do anything to the rocker assembly. After running the engine for 20 miles I noticed that the valve tips and rocker contact pads of valves 7 and 8 were dry of oil. All other valve tips had loads of oil as did all 8 pushrods tops. This got me trying to...

Front window fitting

I had a great deal of trouble fitting the front window with a new rubber. This was how I finally managed it after trashing one rubber and some metal finisher strips. Fix the rubber first Then feed in the cord. I used quite thick nylon cord. p1.jpg Then fix the metal finisher strips. p2.jpg After lub...

Wiper Motor rubber mount mod

Fitting the wiper motor rubber grommets is nigh on impossible without causing injury or damage to paintwork. Here's what I did: I converted the grommet into a 'top hat' grommet and a flat grommet. I used an 11mm gasket punch and a piece of 20mm plastic pipe to secure the grommet. The same could be a...

Re: Mini tensioner mod timing marks

I had to shorten the set screws I got as part of the tensioner kit from Mini Spares.

Re: Timing problem

I’m fitting a NOS distributor drive supplied by Club Spares and now there is just a tiny bit of play. I guess this is to accommodate oil.

Re: Mini tensioner mod timing marks

The mini cover i’m using (CAM 4904) doesn’t have the internal baffle. I’ve drilled a blind hole for the pivot pin large enough to allow full adjustment of the tensioner. I’ve just found out that the original oil thrower (948cc) is to big for the mini cover so I’ve ordered the later oil thrower 12A11...

Re: Timing problem

The camshaft screw gears are totally unworn. When I saw that the distributor drive was such a mess I did think that the cam would be knackered but it Is fine.

Re: Timing problem

Just to update from this post. I have the engine apart and the distributor drive is very worn. I think this may have contributed to the odd timing results between the 4 cylinders. I'm annoyed with myself because checking the distributor drive with the engine in is quite simple. I hope you can see ho...

Re: Mini tensioner mod timing marks

Thanks for the reply. Any idea of mini part number for the pulley and a supplier? The engine is a 948cc. Would it be logical to file a new dimple in the existing pulley? I have a dial gauge so could set piston one at 1.83mm BTDC to get the 5 degree position. Piston one to keep it the same as current...

Mini tensioner mod timing marks

I'm trying to install the mini timing chain tensioner but have found that the timing marks on the mini cover are miles away from the dimple on the crankshaft pulley. The dimples on the sprockets are in line....tensioner not fitted IMG_0636.JPG The dimple is way out with piston 2 at TDC. Do I have to...

Re: Differential pinion bearing preload

Why are you worrying about it ? Was it leaking oil - or whining horribly ? Is the nut loose? If so - I would tighten it - but otherwise, leave well alone. Hardly worth new bearings.. You would do better to look for a 4.22 final drive as an upgrade for the car. The reason for taking the diff off was...

Differential pinion bearing preload

Diff is a 4.55:1 ratio 9X41 teeth from a 1961 950cc I have remove the diff from the car and noticed that it has hardly any pinion bearing preload. It spins quite freely. Do I assume this is bad and replace the pinion bearings? Is it ok to use the collapsible bearing spacer even if the diff originall...

Re: Timing problem

I made a mistake in my description of the static timing. I should have said.... I set the static timing on the compression stroke of cylinder 1 to the 5 degrees pointer using a multi-tester to accurately show the points opening. However I noticed that on the non compression stroke on cylinder 1 the ...

Timing problem

4yrs ago I renewed my single timing chain and cogs. I also renewed the 2 rubber tensioners. When setting the timing with a strobe the dimple was static where as before it was moving about all over the place. I have only done a few thousand miles since the replacement but now when dynamically setting...
