Engine refuses to re start.

1098cc van, started, driven four miles, albeit lumpy, big bang, lots of blue smoke but continues to run. After standing a few hours, totally refuses to start including towing. Defies number of experienced Minor brains. Spark/Points ok/temporary coil swap/fuel getting through making plugs wet. Compre...

Re: Compression test result

Thanks again for your help, I borrowed a newish 'Silverline' tester & did my engine again which shows my tester as being high by around 85psi so that's for the bin. The bottom line is that the original engine is healthy & mine not very good, however as BMC pointed out, the important fact is ...

Re: Compression test result

Carried out another test on my 1300cc A+. Results:- three cylinders at 170 & one at 172 Dry. Wet two at 190, one 191 & one 185, these figures are consistent with all my previous tests. Over the moon with these results from a 1275cc engine which I believe has target figures of 150 to 190 as h...

Re: Compression test result

Thank you for the comments, my brief was just to do compression tests, I didn't investigate further but I will try & check out my tester again on my engine & a 1098cc.

Compression test result

Asked to do a compression test on a 1098cc Trav low on power & smoking a little & apparently uses oil, I was surprised to find the following results which seem higher than normal. I use a Gunson tester which I appreciate is not highly rated, however the many tests I have done on my 1300cc A+...

Re: Mysterious exploding battery

The battery will 'gas' when being heavily discharged... But a compression test shouldn't make great demands on the battery....the engine should be hot, so relatively easy to turn - and all spark plugs removed..... Was it, and were they ? I expect it was cold as the car had broken down the day befor...

No, this happened immediately after compression testing with just enough power left to activate the starter.

Re: Mysterious exploding battery

Maybe it was a 'pressure' explosion rather than a 'flammable' explosion due to build up of gas from the intense use - that couldn't escape because of a blocked vent. The important thing is to flush with plenty of water, and then neutralise with a mild alkali such as sodium bi-carbonate. This sounds...

Mysterious exploding battery

Enquiring on behalf of fellow club member. His traveller had a suspected blown head gasket or valve, carried out compression tests which flattened somewhat the seven year old Halfords battery, refitted the plugs & attempted restart, suddenly the battery exploded causing a complete end to blow ou...

Re: Braking problem

Thanks for that, I'll give it a try, When I first had Marina discs, I took the top hat rubber out, with this latest set up & new master cylinder/remote reservoir, the advice at the time was to make a pinhole in the rubber which I did, I suppose that could have blocked but these symptoms only occ...

Braking problem

I have 8cwt van with 1300cc Ital engine & Ford front disc set up. In 2011 I fitted a new brake servo which worked fine, however I noticed last year that on releasing the brake pedal after slowing down, the brakes seemed to hang on momentarily, very very slightly. This year the same thing has hap...

Re: Crash Testing

Thanks Kevin, I've seen pictures of Minor saloons being tested, I don't know if that was official or not. My reason for enquiring is that I am preparing a little article for our branch magazine basically around mods & safety issues.

Crash Testing

Does anyone happen to know if crash testing was ever carried out on convertibles & travellers ? In respect of travellers, was it done with wood on or off ?

Re: What Battery ?

Thanks Dale, I think the 038 is about 35 ah & 330 amp, I'm beginning to think this is not an exact science, just bung in as big as will fit. Fixed that engine yet ?

Re: What Battery ?

Thanks for that Mike, this is what I had in mind when I went to Costco but they just blinded me with science, they have one at 61 ah & 600 amp. I tried researching on the net but of course nothing is listed now for the likes of Marina/Ital's etc. The battery I have been using for 18 months was d...

What Battery ?

I need a new battery for my '69 van but am totally confused as to which size to choose. My set up is Ital 1300cc A+ & alternator, I have a radio which uses a permanent .02ma drain with the ignition off presumably for it's memory, clock, electric washers also use Sat Nav, mobile phone & Kindl...
