Asked to do a compression test on a 1098cc Trav low on power & smoking a little & apparently uses oil, I was surprised to find the following results which seem higher than normal. I use a Gunson tester which I appreciate is not highly rated, however the many tests I have done on my 1300cc A+...

The battery will 'gas' when being heavily discharged... But a compression test shouldn't make great demands on the battery....the engine should be hot, so relatively easy to turn - and all spark plugs removed..... Was it, and were they ? No, this happened immediately after compression testing with just enough power left to activate the starter.

Maybe it was a 'pressure' explosion rather than a 'flammable' explosion due to build up of gas from the intense use - that couldn't escape because of a blocked vent. Does anyone happen to know if crash testing was ever carried out on convertibles & travellers ? In respect of travellers, was it done with wood on or off ?
