George. Do you know what happened to the ALTA head that was on the car back in 2011?
Hello Rob, I called the seller, who is currently trying to sell an early Tourer, and he tells me the spares and the Alta head engine went a few years before. He thinks the Alta engine went to Australia.

Re: Oil leak from Side-valve oil filter mounting

Thank you Simon and Alan, looks like I need to take some care in doing the sump gaskets. I think I'll attempt to do this work whilst the car is parked over the burnt ground in my front garden (had to burn some of my daughter's old wooden den here), unless I can't get the clearance to get under and u...

Re: Oil leak from Side-valve oil filter mounting

Phil, Thanks again for your valuable help. I did, after all, buy that "tractor" adapter which I may use in the future. Better get a sump gasket set if I need to drop the sump for a clean - ESM list a "conversion" gasket set, is this what I need to get (their part number SV108) which includes the sum...

Re: Oil leak from Side-valve oil filter mounting

Hello Phil, Thanks, I've put that tractor item in my watch list, just in case. I'm trying to keep this car as original as possible so will go with the current oil filter arrangement for now (already got the paper element). Just been under the bonnet again to check on the fittings and it is 2 bolts r...

Re: Low Light UFN 456 is now mine!

George. Do you know what happened to the ALTA head that was on the car back in 2011? Rob, sorry, I don't seem to be getting notifications anymore! I don't know what happened to the Alta head, from the notes I inherited with the car purchase, it may not have been fitted. The original advert, placed ...

Oil leak from Side-valve oil filter mounting

At last I have got the fuel system and water cooling sorted out (temporary plumbing solution) and have been running the engine, adjusting the timing and fuel mixture (having fitted a refurbished carb taken from my spare engine). All that aspect seems very good now but I then noticed a fair amount of...

Re: Low Light UFN 456 is now mine!

Found a link to the original advert from January of this year (on the other forum) https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1074475 Car has 4 locks (includes the passenger replacement door) and all the lock barrels are different! There is another green low-light, just come up on eBay, and the door handl...

Re: Removing Driver's door lock withou dismantling window frame

Hello Folks, I had trawled through the threads about removing the door-lock assembly, but found varying results that all had some problems. I had to remove my door-lock to get at the barrel to read off the key number (my car came with mismatched locks - only the Ignition key was original, and the on...

Re: UFN 456 plumbing

David, Thanks for the reply and the insight into what my fitting is. Your gizmo looks very interesting indeed. Looks to be friction driven off the top outside-edge of the belt as the "pulley" wheel is smooth. - the belt being quite wide. You now have an answer to the water supply question. My car ca...

Re: UFN 456 plumbing

I've had to give up on getting the radiator bolt stub out - the cage for the gaged-nut just keeps opening up as I try to turn the bolt stub with mole-grips. I've punched down the top section and also griped the sides with crocodile snipe-nose mole-grips, to no avail. The protruding stub can still be...

Re: UFN 456 bootlid and lock

Rob and Taupe, Both these suggestions look good. However, during the hot spell, this afternoon, I did a bit more tinkering on the car and, on closer examination of the "holes" saw some remaining thread. The 2BA bolts from my high-light had just dropped straight past (as did the other spare boot-hand...

UFN 456 bootlid and lock

Folks, I managed to get the "later" doorhandle out of the earlier (low-light) fitting and got the key number off it. Bought keys and, although the keys work the boot handle, they don't work the door locks in the replacement doors (this will be another topic). Having removed the botched boot-handle e...

Re: UFN 456 plumbing

It beggars belief that such a fastidious man as Hugh Davy, who kept meticulous records of time and money spent on this car since the day he bought it, could be a bolt-botcher. The rad was secured with over-size bolts (wing size) instead of the 1/2" length ones that should have been used. As a conseq...

Re: UFN 456 plumbing

angle grinder to remove head off bolt or a slim spanner to try and lock trapped nut and a lot of release oil. Once rad is out you can get at the trapped nut easier. I think its 3/8 bsf thread. Thanks Smithkids, the bolt/set screw appears to be 5/16" BSF, same as the seat mounting and wing bolts - a...
