It doesnt sit on top of the carpet just in the metal cover so there is just a slit in the carpet. Like you say if you want something on top of the carpet an MM one would be the best

I always find it amazing when i jump from the 1098 to the 803 and find it so sedate, then when i swop back the 1098 feels like its supercharged
