Re: Timing Marks at the top

Get the timing marks lined up and then paint new marks on the timing chain cover and crankshaft pulley rim. There is no need to go overboard on the timing marks.

Re: Ominous Engine Signs? (magnetic sump plug)

If you want the 'A' Series block internals and the sump to be clean use a high detergent diesel engine oil.
The engine and sump will be clean but the engine oil filter will need changing more regularly.

Re: Garage clearance

The diff ratio is stamped on the top of the rear axle diff housing i.e. 9/38 which equates to a 4.222 to 1 diff ratio.

Re: The WSM on maximum ignition advance.

The BMC distributer data above is really academic in that the data is for a 'A' series engine using a fuel (petrol) that is no longer available. All that the chart will tell you :- is the advance both mechanical and vacuum advance working within the parameters of the data - yes or no. You can set th...

Re: Half shaft refit - handedness?

The only indicator I can give you is look for wear on the drive splines. The wear will take place on the rear drive face of the spline. The wear takes place there as most driving is in the forward direction. Look at the splines and if you can see wear on the spline that wear must be to the rear of t...

Re: Period rear damper kit.

It has been a good kit and has been fitted to my speed hill-climb and sprint Minor for quite a while. The suspension has been lowered by 2" (reset springs) but damper upward travel currently equates to the clearance between the top face of the axle bump rubber and body bump plate. On a non lowe...

Re: Beehive Springs -again!

The reason for the beehive springs is the way round the brake shoe return springs are fitted. If fitted to the inside of the shoe the springs pull the shoe towards the backplate so no beehive spring required. If the springs are fitted to the outside of the shoe the springs pull the shoe away from th...

Re: O series

Depends on how much you want or need a 1275cc engine.
Have a look at the video below - it outlines the work required to convert the transverse 1275cc engine to an 1275cc inline unit.

Re: O series

As to the scarcity of 1275cc in line 'A' Series engines - they are out there but the price has risen considerably. They now command a price of around £700 for a engine that is in need of overhaul. The overcome the lack of 1275cc in line engines the 1275cc transverse engine can be modified to fit as ...

Re: O series

Whilst I have not fitted a 'O' Series to a Minor I did have a Morris Ital estate fitted with a 1.7 'O' Series engine and I was not impressed with the engine or performance.
Nowhere as good as my previous Morris Marina estate fitted with the 1.8 'B' Series engine.

Just use a 3/8" square drive 'T' bar.
Does the job superbly.

Re: Beehive Springs -again!

It may not be able to go anywhere but it could cause a lot of expensive damage if the spring came adrift.
It would be cheaper to replace the duff beehive spring with a new beehive spring.

Re: Beehive Springs -again!

The problem with using the Snap On tool is that it only presses on the centre part of the beehive spring. Using the short nosed pointed pliers the pressure is applied not only to the centre part but also to the top coil which then holds the beehive spring more securely and applies an even pressure t...

That confirms my suspicions that the bell housing shown in the photos above was not Minor Midget or Sprite.
I have a Ford gearbox in my Minor and the bell housing is similar.

I just use a pair of short pointed nose pliers (CK3622B 140mm) and that works well.

Re: Clutch cable

You could easily make a suitable spacing plate out of say 5mm alloy plate. 'e' bay is a good source of small pieces of alloy plate. Use the new slave cylinder as a template for the hole positions and shape. The shape/size must support the whole cylinder. You will need longer bolts to hold the cylind...

Re: 1962 948cc MM - Compression Test

When the 948cc 'A' series engine is in good condition the compression reading should read around 140 - 150lb. When the engine starts to wear the compression reading will get lower. Even if the gauge is not perfectly accurate the relationship between the compression readings indicate that there is so...

Re: 1962 948cc MM - Compression Test

They are on the low side but if the engine is not using oil I would be inclined to run the engine a bit longer before considering an engine overhaul. Whilst the 948cc engine is good it is not a power house. Are you comparing the current engine power output with what you have experienced in the past?...

Re: Clutch cable

Looking at the photos above you do not appear to have a Minor or Midget gearbox fitted. You have the wrong release arm fitted for a hydraulic clutch release operation. The release arm for hydraulic operation is one as fitted to a 1275cc Midget/Sprite Part No: 22G168. The operating rod between the sl...
