Re: Diff question
Yes I suppose if you were to jack up the rear, put the car in 4th (1:1), and turn the engine a few times using the crank handle, you could get a reading on how many times the rear wheels go around for that number of engine turns!

Re: 948, 1098, 998cc Engine...?
Phil is quite right. The sensible route is the use the 948 block and perhaps have it reamed for proper cam bearings.

Re: 948, 1098, 998cc Engine...?
I faced this exact problem. You need the 1098 block with wider main centre bearings (MG Midget?) or double thickness thrust washers (expensive to have custom made if you can't yourself). I got mine made by a guy in the US who makes special thrust washers for Triumphs - when I had a higher paying job...

Re: Do I need a lead replacement additive?
There is a whole book on the subject that has been recommended on the forum before if you fancy delving deep! From memory; without any other changes modern (lead-free) fuels will tend to vary more in their burn times from cycle to cycle ("cyclic variability") than the old fuel, causing the...

Re: Cruising Speeds 1098cc Motorways etc
Best things I ever did for driving my Minor on the motorway were:
- door seals,
- quarterlight seals,
- scrapping the Toyo tyres,
- under-bonnet sound-deadening pad,
- hearing loss!

Re: Engine issue - assistance in Germany
All the conrod big-end bearings can be checked by just removing the sump, the centre main can be checked like this too but the front and rear main bearings require further engine dissassembly.
Watch out for thrust washers falling on your head, don't ask me how I know!

Re: Issues
Without seeing the car I'd suspect a sticking needle valve in the carb float chamber or the fuel pump points. When my fuel pump points got a bit grubby it is was frustratingly intermittent!

Re: Pcv valve
Do you mean so the venting goes the other way through the engine? "Sucking" from the tappet chest breathers or timing cover and out the rocker cover to the PCV valve? I don't see any problem with it... but also no benefit. Mine has an oil catch can between the tappet chest breather and the...

Re: Massive risk may not have paid off.
Sounds like it paid off! Not a bad deal for an engine. After having machining done and buying bearings, an oil pump, gasket sets, pistons, piston rings and a load of fixings a reconditioning could come close to the price you paid. Plus it takes a lot longer and requires existing skills or a lot of r...

Aluminium might be quite suitable - you could make it extremely thin so less dangerous. Very easy to work with too.

This website is a good read, as a 'Fact Check' and to counter a lot of the Doom & Gloom that gets published just to attract readership to websites and magazines..... https://classicenginesmodernfuel.org.uk/E10/Default.aspx?DYN_MENU_MainMenu=1000001 I bought and read this book - extremely intere...

Re: Help what fuel to run?
In terms of octane E5 is going to be overkill unless you've modified the engine to have much higher compression. The only possible benefit is having less ethanol and perhaps the additive mix. If you price it up I think it's cheaper to use a lead/ethanol-stabiliser/octane additive rather than premium...

I've had the hinge pins go on my bootlid before from a little rack. I wouldn't trust them with the weight of a wheel and I don't know where one might get stronger ones that look right.

Some sort of stiff matt like those that go under office chairs to protect carpets perhaps? A spare rear floor rubber matt underneath?

On original 4.5" wide wheels I would recommend the 145. 155 fit but aren't ideal and the Toyos available are crap.

Quest Brothers in St Ives did a good job with my Minor. Ian Allen of Minor Services is in Ely but with a long waiting list.

I'm sure somebody will want to finish that and enjoy it, especially as it's a SII.
