Re: Helicoil help - front damper mounting

Why not try a thread cleaner or tap through the nut first along with some new bolts.
The bolt doesn't look stripped , more worn than anything.

Re: Ignoring a thread

I just click on the "New posts" tab at the top of the page and scroll through.
If I want to see who has replied to a post I click on the "Your Posts" tab that way I can just ignore the posts I don't feel relevant

Re: Wheeler dealers

Whilst the idea of the Wheeler Dealer show is good, it all just seems too stage managed and false. They need a down to earth presenter to really get under the skin of the cars and maybe cover the renovation of one vehicle over a few episodes. Checking classifieds , buying a car, renovating it and se...

Re: Mg Midget 1275 gearbox rebuild

Hi Dermot I have just re-assembled my 3rd motion shaft this evening, before I did I spent a bit of time working out just what the purpose of the little rounded end pin is. I concluded that it is there to prevent the inner hub moving back towards 2nd gear whilst 1st gear is engaged , the only reason...

Re: Mg Midget 1275 gearbox rebuild

I have discovered wear in both the pin and the gear.
Maybe that was the issue all along.
Enquiries have been made to source a new gear and pin.
I'm concerned about the quality of new gears, but it cannot be any worse than a worn old gear.

Re: Andrew Eggleton vs ESM

I suppose its similar to your favourite beer, we each have our preferences.

Just be thankful we have competition within the Morris Minor panel industry, a friend of mine was given a MK1 Cortina recently and the cost to replace the front wings was £750...each!!

Re: Mg Midget 1275 gearbox rebuild

Having thought about it overnight I think the pin in the gear set would be hardened therefore unlikely to be worn, but I wonder if the gear is actually worn beyond tolerances.

Re: Mg Midget 1275 gearbox rebuild

The first picture shows the mainshaft.

The second image shows how far the first gear has moved, leading me to suspect the locking pin.

The steel plate in the last picture is a mount I made up so I can hold the gearbox casing in the vice while working on it.

Re: Mg Midget 1275 gearbox rebuild

Another couple of hours misery with this gearbox. It was all ready, the main shaft was going in but the reverse gear was fouling it's progress, I lifted out the main shaft again and snap went the gear, it didn't go all the way so the balls popped out but far enough for one to pop out when I examined...

Re: Gearbox input shaft Oil seal.

Phil

I read that the 2A3087 cover may require further machining to allow movement of the shift rod as the recess on the cover is too shallow, is that not the case?

Regards

Dermot.

Re: E scooters

One of my pet hates is drivers throwing litter and I used to regularly stop vehicles and request the occupant to pick up their litter even if it meant stopping the traffic. It showed the public we were out there watching and secondly showed them something was being done to uphold standards. Sadly no...

Re: Gearbox input shaft Oil seal.

I have a 22g118 front cover made by BIRMAL and there is hardly sufficient metal in the area of the boss to allow a seal to be fitted. I also have three 2A3087 front covers made by C & A. and BIRMAL. The internal and external shapes/forms are slightly different in all cases. I also have three di...

Re: Stuttering at 50+

To properly clean the tank and to ensure any loose flakes of rust are removed it will have to come out. The tank on my minor was in a horrendous state, the car was running but occasionally it stuttered, on removal of the tank the amount of rust that came out had to be seen to be believed. I then cle...

Re: Gearbox input shaft Oil seal.

If you read my post in the link above you will see that I made the comment that not all the scroll boss's are the same and shape/thickness is dependent upon the manufacturer - so one seal does not fill the one size criteria. Phil I did indeed read your post and very informative it was, my cover app...

Re: Gearbox input shaft Oil seal.

I have been to my local machine shop but they think there is not enough meat in the cover to accept the seal I have. They were going to weld around the hole, then machine it flat to accept the seal. At £100 I declined their offer. Reading the other excellent post makes me think is it worth the hassl...

Gearbox input shaft Oil seal.

I have seen the modified input shaft oil seal cover advertised for sale. As I have the original scroll seal, is the newer seal worth the expense? Would I be able to ream my existing cover out to take the new oil seal? Does anyone know if there is enough "meat" on the cover to simply ream t...

Thanks for explaining that Murrayminor. Very interesting. Surely we can't go on like this; something needs to change! Unfortunately UK Governments, whichever flavour you prefer, seem to think by throwing a few extra bobbies at the problem its solved. The stark truth is the 20,000 officers promised w...

Re: E scooters

My sympathy is also with the police Murrayminor. However, a few years ago I did a Freedom of Information request and asked how many pavement cyclists had been issued with a fixed penalty notice in the last 12 months in Nottinghamshire. The answer was....none. A couple of years ago I asked the same ...
