Re: Rear Axle Removal
That rumbling sound just now was Joseph Whitworth turning in his grave. :D I, as much as anybody, can copy a simple design without too much trouble but still fail to 'Engineer' (with a capital E) to the correct standard. Whilst we still enjoy plentiful supply of parts at rock-bottom prices we have t...

Re: 1098 box onto 948 engine
Yes, I had to raid another engine to get the thrower. The one I had expected to use was for the really early cover and wouldn't fit since instead of a small step in the middle it was flat and had a turned up edge round it. Having sorted that I realised that I need to cut the breather can off of the ...

Re: 1098 box onto 948 engine
Thanks, Phil. That's excellent! I'd seen the Gerard's Garage page and also a few other ones, some of which gave opposite opinions on things such as the need for the cast iron backplate to space the spigot bearing away from the input shaft. I thought it would be worth getting a definitive answer (or ...

Re: 1098 box onto 948 engine
Does anyone have a 948 gearbox front cover handy? I'm after the dimension from the mating face to the centre of the pivot. It is 1-3/8 inch on the 1098 but probably different on the 948.
Thanks
Rob
Thanks

Re: Are you bored? (Mathematics question)
blowog2.jpg Engine is now well on the way towards completion. Still working on getting this blueprint turned into a file for laser cutting. I'm not very computer savvy but have got the files in .pdf format. Do I need to convert them first before I could try sending? Kids are not being at all helpfu...

Had the same. Lifted wooden boot floor, undid screws holding down fuel sender, looked inside, filter gauze on end of intake pipe to pump clogged with crud and dust from respray. Good clean out and it worked fine. Might be the same issue?

Re: Identifying 1275 engine
If it has S rods then it may also have an EN40B crankshaft. One on Ebay recently for £1200 (not entirely realistic?) Other version will have EN16T on it, IIRC. Worth having a look.

Re: 803 timing cover felt?
Interesting what calver says about saving 4hp with an electric pump. I have all the hardware here, including the BMC blanking plate for the front of the block. I have a BMW 7-series pump that I was saving for an Austin Seven.

Re: 803 timing cover felt?
I had an idea that some would foul the wall of the front cylinder, hence the small bore ones being shallower. Guess it is another school day for me.

Re: 803 timing cover felt?
Only other cover here is an A+ style which means trimming some reinforcement off of the front plate. Oh well, I might as well go for a duplex conversion at the same time. Next job is to sort out a water pump. The 1275 ones here on the shelf have no bypass but they don't have overly long impellers. M...

The cover is the type shown above. Do you have the lever the inside part out to get...

Re: Sump welding
Yup. 2. hours of chasing pinholes and blowing through. Finally got the back half changed with about 1/2 inch up the sides but leaving in the old sump plug boss. I'll change it as soon as I can find a decent one.

Sump welding
Changing a 948 from a cast iron (Vedette) sump to a tin one. The first tin one was rotten so I grabbed a spare but it looks to be a 1275 (bigger rear seal). Has anyone had luck welding a tin sump?

Starter speed
I've previously had a fantastic starter in the 1098 but it died. The new one (as in exchange B90 factory job) is nowhere near as fast. Is there any 'magic' involved in getting them to work or is there a secret method to ensure speed, other than good cleaning of the comm and the gaps between? Could i...

Re: 1098 box onto 948 engine
OK. I have some 1275 carbon thrusts here so will try that. Ta.
Next job is to find an easy way to get that cast iron sump off. At least it was never filled with oil.

Re: 1098 box onto 948 engine
It'll be a 1275 early box but with a Minor fork from a 1098 Minor or a 948 if I can find one here. I did think about a hydraulic release system but thought that might become a problem when converting back, unless you know something different, Phil? The pedals are MM ones at the moment but I might be...

1098 box onto 948 engine
Probably covered elsewhere, but... This engine has a 948 block/crank. I don't have a 1098 flywheel so I was planning to use a 948 flywheel and a Herald (9-spring) clutch cover. The gearbox is a 1275 one. Can I get away with a 948 backplate, 948 thrust bearing and a 1098 release lever? Is that the no...

Re: Are you bored? (Mathematics question)
Thanks for the offers of help, guys. I have a local laser cutting company who can cut from emailed files and drop them off en-route to work for me. Ideal, really. I'm just trying to use all this spare time to find and fix lots of little 'issues' that I've had on the back burner for a long time.
