Re: Wiring diagram 1958 traveller

The workshop manual has diagrams for all different Minors. If you specify the car model and any alterations to the standard wiring then firms such as Autosparks can supply a correctly colour coded loom to your requirements

Re: Please What is this Model & Year

The maroon car is a 1952 Series MM saloon which according to my records has been converted. It should not have overriders as these were only fitted to the 4 door Series MM.
The front wings are replacements, the originals did not have the seams from the headlights to the bonnet

Re: Lucas L482 rear lamps

L482 tail lights were fitted to American export MG TCs, one either side of the fuel tank. I am informed by the owner of one such car that they also operated as indicators in the same manner as on the 61 - 63 Minor

Re: radial tyres

145/80/14 or 155/80/14 tyres are suitable for a Minor. 80 is the aspect ratio, ie tyre height to tread width. A 155 tyre has a greater circumference than a 145 so will give you higher gearing than a 145

Re: is there an alternative carb for a mm 918 side valve

Th standard carb for a Series MM is SU H1 1 1/8in horizontal as opposed to an H1 semi downdraft as fitted to the Series II. You would need to modify the inlet manifold to fit an H2 1 1/4 carb

Re: tubeless valves

The Series MM wheels take a larger valve than standard. Make sure that the fitter knows this before he rips out the existing valve and throws it into the far corner of the tyre bay. If he leaves the existing valve in place check that you are not charged for new valves on the invoice!

If the head is not attached to the engine you can see the condition. If it is attached to the engine it may be severely corroded and will cost a fortune to repair

Re: A slight worry

They are just retaining screws and should not be used to pull the brake drum on as that will damage the screw cross head. Fit the drum and tighten it with a couple of wheel nuts, then fit the screws to retain the drum. Remove the wheel nuts to fit the wheel.

Re: squeeky breaks

Back on the subject of brakes, I recently fitted a new set of 7in front shoes and they screeched with a metal to metal sound every time with I touched the brake pedal. They were so bad that I had to change them for another set, what a difference, completely silent, firm pedal and pulled up strongly

Re: Distributor curves.

Any A Series distributor will fit the side valve engine which gives the option of connecting the vacuum advance to see if that has any effect on the performance. The USHM3 head has graduations marked around the distributor shaft. These are at 5 deg. intervals. If a water pump is fitted you cannot se...

Re: Lowlight filler caps

I had the same problem when I first had my Series MM and fitted a locking fuel cap. The more petrol in the tank the shorter distance it would run before stopping as it would create a vacuum in the tank. The give away was the hiss as I released the fuel cap

Re: Green light shining from behind the grill/ashtray

The main beam warning light was fitted from early 1952. It was not fitted to the lowlights as it did not make any difference if you were on main beam or dip!
