Just had a look at the lowlight. The frame has 2 screw holes in the side of the frame for the hinge whilst I THINK the later cars with the external hinge have the screw holes in the upper face of the frame. I have a lowlight here with a rotten frame but the other bits are OK. If I decide to go with ...

Problem solved. Morris Motors used a UK casting company that had the good-luck symbol on their conrods as a feature to improve reliability (???) and this carried on until the 1940s when they dropped the mark for obvious reasons. Likewise, Jaguar cars was previously known as SS Cars which wouldn't ha...

I don't think that the germans regard that as their flag anymore (Well, most of them) There is a Casting company in India that have been in business since the 1950s and they cast car components. Their name is "The Swastika Group" so it may be that they manufactured a batch of rods? h...

Early MMs had no external upper hinge, the pivot being a pin inside of the frame. Ought to possible to make one, but the rubber seal might be the problem. I'll have a look at the ones in the shed when it stops raining. Do your frames have holes to screw in the little cast pivot for the top hinge or ...

Hmmmm. Cam-drive waterpump for the exhaust and a revcounter? Maybe that is where that MM revcounter gauge came from that was shown on here a while ago?

Lucas SR4 magneto, too. Quite common on aircraft engines on PFA/LAA aircraft conversions. Mine used to have them until I 'went electronic'.

The 40819 has the same max advance on the basepalte as the MM and it brings the advance in quickly so that you have high advance early, which to my mind is good if you aren't using post-war 80 octane pool petrol! I started at TDC with no pinking. The other way to set it up is to run at 4000-ish rpm ...

Sorry, Oh yes, we were talking about those bolt thingies. Not pleasant to remove once knackered. Lots of WD40 to get them out and lots of copper grease to get them back in. Are the originals slotted flat/round head or slotted bolt head?

MM tuning

I'm now fairly well set up for tuning engines. I've had a crack at our MM and have changed the rather dilapidated MM distributor for a Mini Cooper S dissy 23D4 (Lucas part 40819) which has no vacuum advance unit and appears cosmetically similar. Using a quite clever piece of kit I have determined th...

How about a 14 inch rim from a scrapyard and cutting out the inner section (Datsun or similar) and welding the good modern outer section onto the old LP inner? Someone here on the site was doing this with GM (UK Vauxhall Vectra) rims but I can't recall who it was. I wanted to do the same but didn't ...

Switch under the dash. When moved, it connects the brake light to the horn. At every junction.....Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep! Timing cover touching the chain? Always the case if you put the breather'd A+ cover over a duplex since there is a nice ring spotwelded onto the inside of the covers with breathers.

Bottom pulley on back-to-front and twisting the chain?

Clutching at straws, now.

Can the early legs be re-threaded 'oversize'to rescue them with 'rethreaded undersized' trunnions? I've already found a set of 1098 legs (new) to put the Riley brakes on all round on our lowlight tourer. I bought a Riley project many years ago just to get the brakes off it but the rear axle was a bi...

There are no signs that the bronze trunnions are replacements and I'm almost certain that the legs are the originals. None of the nuts and bolts appear to have any marks indicating that they'd ever been off. Might be that it was replaced carefully with 2 new legs. Were bronze trunnions ever given as...

Bronze Onions.(Trunnions)

Well. that's what my 3 yr old son called them. I had some sad news to report. After 57 years, our 1952 MM has failed an MOT. Intermittent horn (dirty fuse), zero brake on right rear (Dirty cylinder and different to the 1098 ones I keep on the shelf :x ) and finally....wobbly top Onion on one side. I...

If I wanted to get the smoothest engine that also ran at the best economy then I'd get the largest capacity I could (+60) and skim the head to get the highest comp ratio I felt I could live with (10:1?) The breathing would be the next obvious area and that means a Mini manifold and HS4 carb (12G787 ...

Alex. I'd given the car a good spanking after visiting a rally at gaydon. I was going down the M5 and stopped at the M50 services when it started making funny noises and the oil pressure light/buzzer came on (set at 25 psi) The threads had pulled off the main cap bolt on one side and the whole cap b...
