Re: Silencer advice please

Thanks Phil. I take it you are recommending the full Maniflow including the LCB. At the moment I'm tending towards keeping my mini manifold as existing, as I like its "sort of standard" appearance and the LCB isn't needed for performance. Would there be any problem using the ESM Marina dow...

Silencer advice please

I've now got my Traveller's 1275 engine running okayish and have it booked in for rolling road tuning at the end of March. (I'm only aiming at smooth and economical running, not racing!). I've decided, though, that the standard bore stainless steel exhaust system I bought as part of a cheap job lot ...

Re: Traveller aluminium side panel fitment

Perhaps I can't quite visualise what you are doing, but I would have thought it would be easier the other way round - use the predrilled flange holes as a guide and drill new holes through the aluminium panels. The previous holes in the panels shouldn't be a problem if covered by mastic. Just be sur...

Re: Traveller aluminium side panel fitment

The supplier is correct, the panels were originally fitted to the wooden frames before the frames were fixed to the flanges. They were actually made in a different factory than the steel body and were complete with doors and panels before meeting the rest of the car on the assembly line! The flange ...

Re: Vac advance/distributor issues

Solved! I tried to drive it up the drive as suggested, terrible with or without vac, on whatever advance adjustment I gave it. Checked the plugs, nice biscuity colour so mixture reasonably ok, at tickover at least. As suggested I considered what might have changed (since my sole road test back in Au...

Re: Vac advance/distributor issues

Apologies, the distributor is indeed a 25D 41270 B, dated 05 72. So the mechanical advance sounds at least okayish? I haven't been able to test the engine under load yet. Sob story alert - I've been on crutches since being on the losing side in an argument between my push bike and a van before Chris...

Vac advance/distributor issues

I'm having what I think are problems with my vacuum advance. I've got the engine (Midget 1275) running smoothly at tickover, but it loses power as soon as I try to take it out up my steepish driveway. I've set the timing by timing light to around 13 BTDC at approx 1000 revs (can't find my digital re...

Hi Volrod. Yes, it was you I was referencing, and great to see you back on here. I hope my comment didn't come across as disrespectful in any way, as I remember thinking your skills and attention to detail were absolutely amazing. With my much quicker and dirtier methods I still haven't "quite&...

Re: Quality tools

I couldn't afford Britool, so when I got my first Minor in 1970, when I was 19, I bought the lower quality Elora sockets (just the ones I thought I needed, not a set) and a ratchet. Obviously a false economy, although I'm still using them fifty years later!

He may well have done, but it was his sister Pat Moss who rallied Minors very successfully in the 1950s, for the BMC works team, so they did have some idea of its capabilities!

Re: Heater wiring

I referred to the green & yellow wire because that is the colour of that wire on my car. I'd forgotten, however, that I had cannibalised a twin fan version of the heater from a mini, which is fitted with green & yellow. The original heater feed was indeed green. Connecting to the voltage reg...

Re: Heater wiring

I can't remember exactly, but I think the green/yellow heater feed should have a spade connector and should clip directly to the voltage regulator incoming terminal on the back of the speedo. As it is so close to the heater I don't think there would be any separate provision in the loom. The black w...

Re: Are hazard lights a hazard to Moggies?

Well, I knew I'd read it somewhere, because it affected where I located mine. And here it is: /www.carlightblog.com/2017/11/03/wheres-hazard-light-switch/ "Following the latest standards, passengers now also need to be able to operate the switch for the hazard lights; so today you’ll usually fi...

Re: Are hazard lights a hazard to Moggies?

Although I fully understand the desire for a discreet installation this could, in theory, put you at odds with an MOT tester (if you choose to have one). My understanding is that the requirement is for the switch to be visible and operable from the front passenger seat as well as the driver''s seat....

Re: More progress less rust.

I used a broadly similar arrangement of trestles. One thing I found useful was fitting heavy duty castors to the trestle feet, which allowed me to adjust the position in the garage fairly easily. Not having the luxury of a two post lift (me, jealous?) I did lift the shell onto the trestles with a ja...

I've no real experience or opinion of the difference between the brands, but I did like the humour of an American expert who explained that the way to tell good Champions from bad ones was to put them in a bucket of water. The good ones would float...

Re: Chassis leg flange to Xmember

Not disagreeing that it would be better to have the circular flange, but it only seems to assist positioning rather than any significant contribution to strength. My new legs (secondhand unused, manufacturer unknown) didn't have the circular flange but there was enough evidence on the floor and cros...

Don't think changing to lhd involved changing the cylinder head, but as I'm sure Kennatt knows that, I'll treat it as a humorous suggestion!

Re: Starting problem

I've said this in another post in the last few days, but I had the same symptoms and fitting a new solenoid did not cure them. The answer was to ensure that the body of the solenoid earths really well to the bulkhead, by cleaning the mounting screws and the adjacent metal. I was surprised at how str...
