Re: Vibration - again

I've just replaced the diff in my series II, so I have a nearly new 4.22 diff available. The job of swapping diffs is not so hard, just requiring new gaskets for the diff and halfshafts. My prop is now spinning off centre at the back too, and something i need to remedy immediately before it wears ou...

Re: fitting new screen rubber on a splitty?

When BMC formed, joining Austin and Morris, the A series engine was made available for the minor but it was still in 'development'. The white metal bearing shells are able to absorb debris, allowing for a lack of 'full flow filter' that was promised on the sales brochure for the series II. Once a pr...

Re: 1952 windscreen

I don't know if this is any help, but after a kind person shot out one of my windscreens, I didn't fancy reinstalling the whole shebang so vacuumed out all the crumbs of glass, and slid a new one into the slot, having taken out the pillar. Originally I replaced the old rubber, which leaked, and had ...

Re: UJ too big for my prop?

I've had a prop set itself free on the motorway, many years ago, so not an experience i want to repeat. That time it was the sliding joint of the gearbox having seized up and eventually tearing apart. The prop was still retained by the final drive shaft off the gearbox (splined) but as this got bent...

Re: UJ too big for my prop?

I am not happy driving the car with the uj like it is. It was my first thought that a needle had got out. Nothing has loosened up since doing it though. I thought maybe the joint was bigger because the old one has no grease nipple. The prop was swapped by Eddy Pepper, of Danbury if anyone remembers ...

UJ too big for my prop?

Having the prop off to replace the diff, I foolishly decided to replace a worn UJ, which was a bit loose and rattly. Having removed the clips, and bashed out the old cups, the new one went in easily enough, but only one side could be made to go in far enough for the circlip on both sides. The means ...

Re: Braking bad! (Pun intended)

I just took my own advice and swapped the new front drums for the old back drums, and now theres no judder (it had been getting less anyway). these are the new drums, showing 3 patches each of brake lining material glazed on; https://www.mmoc.org.uk/Messageboard/download/file.php?mode=view&id=12...

Re: Braking bad! (Pun intended)

Same here. I replaced the pipe under the radiator because it rusted through. Fortunately i tested the brakes while parked and the damn thing sprung a leak. I fitted these new drums that judder, but they seem to be getting smoother with use. I should have swapped the backs to front as they hadn't wor...

Re: Prop shaft? How to line it up?

Sounds more like wheel balance. The prop is not connected in any way to the steering. Unless damaged the prop is balanced to rotate without vibration. If the wheels are balanced then the wheel bearings could be worn out.

There are no bearing seals in the diff.

Re: Axle conversion

Rebuilding a diff is not an easy job; the alignments have to be jigged or something. When i replaced the 5.3 it was because they werent available at the time, and there were only pinion and crown wheel sets, for about the same cost as a new 4.2. Replacing the diff is easy, just pull out the drive sh...

The series 2 box can be mashed up with the 948 box, but not the 1098

Re: Axle conversion

The 1098 was mated to 4.2 for higher road speed, compared to 948, so yes i reckon. You will have to use the breather hole to fill i think. When i replaced the oil i remember overfilling and getting oil onto the brake drums. My brakes are pathetic. I once had to make an emergency stop and had to stan...

Could be a 4.5, if the engine is 948cc. Just checked google and the healey uses the same type of diff.

I dont know anything about Healy, but assuming its a regular BMC diff then it would be fine. I see you also have a 54 series 2.

Re: Axle conversion

I changed my series 2 diff for a 4.2 no problems. I will probably change back to the 5.3 though because the 803cc does struggle a bit :o 1098cc with a 4.2 would be sweet. You should uprate the brakes at the same time, at least with a servo, if not a set of discs.

Re: Gearbox oil - your suggestions please

Sorry to hear that, hope you recover rapidly. I only ever dropped the box when i was much younger, and it was tough. With the car up on ramps I had to pull the box back and rotate it while pulling it back onto my chest and then roll it down onto the ground. Putting one back was just as unpleasant.

Re: Gearbox oil - your suggestions please

Just been reading the operation manual for the series II, and there is big capitals on page 39; Heavy lubricants must not be used in the gearbox. Use one of the engine oils indicated = SAE 30

Running a modern synthetic engine oil in the box could be very rewarding.

Re: Gearbox oil - your suggestions please

I had a noisy series II box, which i tried to fix with a drop of stp. Sadly the flow to the sliding joint at the back, to the prop, dried up and eventually the prop tore the back off. If anything a better modern oil may be better when up to temperature, at least it will flow to all the parts. If its...
