Re: How long should it last
Les, you have a very good point. We should not have to put up with inferior quality goods. I completely agree, and it is so frustrating being let down by new parts that are worse quality than 50 year old parts. The problem is, collectively I think we are all to blame, as the proliferation of poor q...

Agreed - I've always found around 30 psi to be good on 155s. They're too squaby at lower pressures for my liking.

Re: master cylinder and torsion bar removal
Dont bother reversing the bolts, the heads were made thin for a reason.. This is really good advice. I've done it on 2 cars, because everyone said it made no difference, and then took years to figure out where the horrible suspension knock was coming from. Of course it was the torsion bar hitting th...

Re: TYRES
You don't need tubes. The wheels are tubeless type, but a lot have had tubes fitted in the past. Tyres available now seem to be: 145 80 14 Bridgestone - people say they're great but you won't find them for less than around £70 fitted 145 80 14 Camac - 'old-fashioned' style radial, fairly average I t...

I've just had a similar problem on one of my Minors - in the end it turned out to be the master cylinder.

Re: master cylinder and torsion bar removal
If you've got a coil spring compressor, that makes quite light work of moving the torsion bar far enough to get the M/C bolts out.

Re: Petrol
Probably no need to worry about it, but pinking is pre-ignition of the charge of air and petrol in the cylinder; that is, where it ignites slightly before it should do, and doesn't burn smoothly. It's due to the ignition timing being too far advanced (i.e. the spark happening too soon) for the type ...

Re: Petrol
Hi Cyril, Sorry to hear you're still having problems. It's so difficult to say what would be causing it without being there, but it sounds to me like something to do with the ignition system, especially if it's just been serviced. There are a lot of dodgy ignition parts out there these days unfortun...

Re: Petrol
There seems to be some confusion regarding octane rating and the lead in petrol, which are 2 different things. Super unleaded is higher octane than standard unleaded, which means that it is less likely to cause 'pinking' which means that you can advance the ignition timing slightly further and get a...

Re: 803cc to 948cc
the tail shaft of the gearbox is indeed 'bolt on bolt off', however unless you change the reverse selector, you'll find you have nothing stopping the gear lever moving over in to the reverse gate, as the 803 gear lever has to be lifted to get the reverse gate, whereas the 948 one has a spring in the...

Re: My clutch
Looks like a 948 clutch to me. You can measure to be sure, as the 1098 is an inch larger diameter (I think!). 1098 pressure plate is a domed shape, not flat like yours.

Isn't the Mini auto transmission the same as used in the heavier 1100/1300? They weigh around the same as a Minor.

Re: Clutch adjustment?
I have tightened up the nuts against the clutch selector to same level as old rod but now the clutch pedal is almost vertical and the little square plate that sits round the pedal is about an inch or two beyond where the floor will be. I think the clue's in the line above. If the floor isn't in, th...

Re: Improving brakes
Well worth getting the Mintex shoes. I'd avoid the cheapest- you'll find they are more likely to fade quicker, and it sounds like that's what you're trying to avoid! While you've got the brakes apart, check the non-leaky cylinders are moving OK, as sometimes they get 'sticky'. With the drum off, you...

Re: 803 gearbox, 1098 innards??
It's not really a 'standard mod'- more common to use 948 box (as it's easier), but the conversion using a 1098 box is well documented on here. You need to retain the casing and innards, but change the reverse gear selector and a few other bits as well as the SII tail piece, and a little machining is...

Re: Vacuum advance
The carb on your Minor (if it's an HS2 the same as on mine) will blank off the vacuum at idle. You'll get most vacuum just off idle, not if you're revving the thing up like mad, when you'll have no vacuum either. TBH though, it's really not possible that there is no suction coming from the carb if t...

Phone around some of the smaller Morris Minor traders (you'll find details in Minor Matters if you get it). People only ever seem to deal with C Ware, ESM or Bull Motif, or look on ebay... There's a lot of good second-hand stuff to be had out there if you are prepared to leave the computer (of cours...

Re: 803 Gearbox
Sounds good! 948s are much happier at those revs than 1098s which always sound to me like they are going to self-destruct when you rev them too much. Unfortunately, there are a few too many hills round by me I think, though as you say, it must be good on the motorway.
