Well, someone may have done this successfully but, until they pop up on here and tell us, I would advise against it.

Are you sure the push button itself is providing a dead short when pressed? And its peripheral contact to the column's hub is good? Yes, I would be checking those. In any case its not difficult to remove the steering wheel - assuming you have the correct socket (I believe it is 3/4 whitworth, altho...

Can't see what's 'destructive' about unscrewing the breather by means of a screwdriver fitted into the slotted head. In any case, the tube, the hole in the tube and the space underneath the cap were pretty much as clean as a whistle. I made sure the drain holes in the brake back plates were clear wh...

I doubt this one will dismantle, but we'll see....

So long since I've done this, I've forgotten...... I want to check the diff breather is clear. I can see the breather near the top of the diff casing. Its an old metal one and appears to have a groove in the cap, which I assume is for unscrewing the thing. Is it as simple as that - use a screwdriver...

Well, I couldn't find anything wrong so I took the car to a local classic car garage. They couldn't find anything wrong either. Its taken 10 years to wear to this point so, as its still within legal limits, I've put it in the boot as the spare and see how it goes.
