Re: Another valve stem thread.

Mr Pike, Your smoke on start up seems curious to me. My 1098 doesn't smoke on start up even though it has NO oil seals on any valves at all. Long ago I stopped fitting them to exhaust valves on the reasoning that they needed all the lubrication they could get and then stopped fitting them to the inl...

Swampy,
Some more! See here viewtopic.php?p=141721&hilit=whats+the+ ... or#p141721
I've always printed off this sort of thing (I've several files) 'cos you never know if it's going to be there when you want it.

Swampy, You might like to read this too https://board.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?p=196788&hilit=How+to+fit+a+headlining#p196788 There seems to be more on the subject if you put into the search box under the heading "Useful Tips" the phrase "How to fit a headlining". Best of lu...

Re: Smiths Auxiliary Water Pump

So George, that's what that pump's for! I've had one on the shelf for over 50 years and have been wondering all the time. But, blimey, the ticket price of £50's high; do you want another one? Mine's scruffy but complete and turns - but no lubricator, of course! When visiting Farnboro' (we're ex-Nort...

Re: Rear Suspension Overhaul Advice please

Stephen, Going back to advice on how to support the car, I saw this reading my Workshop Manual this eve (as yer do) that on page 3 of the "General Information" section there is the following HOISTING THE CAR WITH A SLING Either end of the car may be raised by a wire or rope passed below th...

Re: Cruising Speeds 1098cc Motorways etc

Translating Nickol's figures, I make 100km/hr at 62 mph and 5.9 litres for 100km as almost 40mpg. A further thought regarding vibration. I've found that while wheel balance is worth doing, the cast drums are also out of balance as are the cast hubs. On the front with a drum mounted on a hub its poss...

Sudden fort!
What tyre pressures do you run at, Stephen? I've Camac tyres all round, radial tubeless 145R14s and filled to 25 psi at which I get even wear across the treads. (And I hope to follow in Monty-4's footsteps on sound deadening too.)

Re: Cruising Speeds 1098cc Motorways etc

Stephen, Some more thoughts on steering feel at high speeds. Are your front dampers functioning properly? I say this, because prompted by discussion a while ago on this site I found the oil in mine was low and the damping was much reduced. I refilled them and was surprised at the feel improvement (a...

Re: Cruising Speeds 1098cc Motorways etc

Dear Stephen, My '63 Traveller is unmodified except for seat belts, a towing hitch and radial ply tyres. It'll cruise at 60-65mph (GPS read) all day without distress with a bit in hand for motorway type hills and headwinds when full throttle can be used for quite extended periods. (Maximum speed is ...

Re: Engine problems & cam timing dial

Greetings Dirk. I hesitate to be at odds with "m'Learned Friend" Phil but if you want only to determine your valve timing you can do this solely by "feel". When the valves are closed the pushrods are free and easily rotatable by finger pressure and so if you turn the engine you c...

Of course, I'm well aware of the adage "Teach not a parent's mother to extract The embryo juices of an egg by suction" but please bear in mind that oil viscosity is highly dependant on its temperature. Scroll down this link to the lowest chart to see the variation; https://www.kewengineeri...

Re: gearbox bearing shims

Kevin, don't use heat on magnets. They don't like it. Just drill the drain plug, clean it with, say, petrol or meths, and when dry araldite in a cheap neodymium rod magnet like this https://www.guysmagnets.com/neodymium-magnets-c11/5-mm-x-10-mm-neodymium-rod-p140 I can't find a photo of my g'box mag...

Re: Valve stem oil seals

A late thought. I 've found that those small "O" seals often broken or missing and then have worried where the missing bits might have gone and so in my last build have not fitted any form of valve oil seal at all. With a good fit between the valve and its guide I've noticed no increase in...

Re: Rocker Advice

And now back to the rockers . . .
That's it Phil, "Minispares" was where I bought the spacers and shims, and there were enough of the latter in the kit to do the job. And with my press steel rockers I didn't have to do any machining of the pillars.

Re: Rocker Advice

Rocco & Phil, I don't want to add complications but after a conversation with Phil I rebuilt my rocker shaft with spacers and washers rather than the springs. These were bought as a kit (from Minisport? ESM?) for about £12 and enabled me to get the rocker pads exactly in line with the valve tops...

Re: Brake fluid moister tester at Lidl

Well, I bought one today and dipped the probes into the brake fluid in my Trav's master cylinder. All the LEDs lit up indicating over 4% moisture content; the instructions recommend the immediate replacement of the fluid. Hmm; and then I remembered the brake fluid was last changed well before the Co...
