Re: Track rod lock nut

Wire brush threads and nuts. Soak in Plus Gas for a day. Then soak in Plus Gas for a day. Select a perfectly fitting spanner. Apply good heat to the nut. Fit spanner, take up the slack, and hit with a big hammer - make sure that you are hitting CLOCKWISE as you want the nut to move on further, away ...

Re: tyres

For a standard Minor, I'd go 145 x 14 every time. Lose the remoulds, even though they won't affect the steering if they.re on the rear.

Re: Confused - Petrol??!

The only stupid question is the one that you don't ask. If you need to know something then ask away, that's how we all learn. Practical Classics magazine ran some tests and proved valve seat regression. The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs has a list of approved (and tested) additives. M...

Re: steering column noise

If it is really from the column, then it's likely that the cover over the indicator switch is catching on the steering wheel, which is not running completely true - could be a worn felt bush. Try oiling the felt (just drip oil down the central column) and also adjusting the switch cover by slackenin...

Re: Door Drain Holes

That sounds about right. The blanking plate is all part of the door construction, but does not really seal the holes - it should appear to be at a slight angle and not actually touching the hole. The standard holes are not round, they are elongated, so yours may be a modified door bottom. in which c...

Rainex is like Marmite. I hate Marmite, and certainly wouldn't use that on my windscreen.

Re: Clutch bite-point adjustment

The varying pedal position is caused by the release bearing gradually wearing down. Modern bearings tend to be ball race and do not wear, but ours are a ring of carbon which does wear down - NEVER sit with your foot on the clutch for long periods (eg waiting at lights), always put the car in neutral...

Re: Clutch bite-point adjustment

Turn the nuts clockwise to decrease free play, which is what you need to do. 1.25 ins for 1098, 3/4 for 948, measured at the top of the pedal.

Re: windscreen wipers - are they supposed to be ineffective?

It's probably down to wear and/or cheap replacements over the years. Start by checking the arms. There should be no play in the links, and the spring should be enough to hold the blade on the screen - not too much spring, just enough. With poor arms, the blades can lift away from the screen. Blades ...

Collective Noun

Seeing another post referring to a "collection" of Minors, I wondered what other nouns might be suitable...

Fleet and Collection both seem a bit tame. How about a garage, pump, brood, or mould? All suggestions welcome.

Re: Cheap 20/50 Oil - where's it gone?

You need Roys of Wroxham, a great independent supermarket. They're practically every shop in Wroxham (Norfolk) and have a few other stores as well. http://www.roys.co.uk Plenty of their own brand 20/50 in Sudbury last Saturday. When the really cheap stuff has dried up, then I can recommend Morris Lu...

Re: Misfiring.

Roy, I agree that it is rarely the coil. The "believed faulty" unit appears to have good solid terminals when cold and hot, and shows OK on a meter, but definitely shows faulty on two different cars! xpress, I've not used the alternative dizzy, but points are OK for at least 6,000 miles, a...

Re: Misfiring.

I like the theme of the choke, but I'm afraid there's no winner. I swapped the condenser with a known good one. Replaced the rotor arm, cap, and leads with known good ones. Checked compression, vacuum, and timing; replaced the fuel pump, and checked that the cap vent was clear. Finally, I swapped th...

I did, both phone and Broadband. I stuck it for three months and then moved everything back to BT. Over the years I've had a few very serious professional run-ins with BT, but Talk Talk are in a completely different league. If you do go with them and then switch back, make sure that you cancel the D...

Misfiring.

Symptoms: The car starts perfectly. Runs well for about 12 miles, then starts misfiring. Doesn't stop, just misses when under load. Idles OK. It's now been fixed, but just for fun, what would the other experts think was the cause? I'll post the answer once we've had a few suggestions.

Re: Can anybody identify this screw?

At the non-pointed end, has it sheared off? If yes, then there could be a head missing, if no, then it's a stud. If it is sheared, is the break as rusty as the rest? If yes then it's been there a long time. Is the apparent rim to the left of the nut genuinely an un-threaded collar? If yes, then it a...
