Re: Lower trunnion

Richard Many thanks for amending your post. The adapters as you say do have a step. My only comment on the Owen Burton adapters I have (pictured below) is that the rear reaction bar female splines are used 50/50 with the adapter and the rear torsion bar splines. It is the rear reaction arm/splines t...

Re: Sump gasket advice

Whether you use the plastic/rubber or cork gaskets at the sump ends or paper gaskets on the block to sump sides there is absolutely no need if assembled correctly for gasket go/sealant. Just a smear of general purpose grease on all gasket/seal faces. I would recommend that you clean off all the gask...

Re: Lower trunnion

The spline engagement into the front suspension should be as much as possible. The limiting factor is the threaded stud (non removable) at the rear of the torsion bar. The nut on those threads must be fully engaged with the torsion bar stud threads i.e. the threads should extend right through nut pl...

Re: Lower trunnion

The packing may have been done to ensure that there was sufficient spline lengths within both of the arms. The depth that the front torsion bar splines fit into the front lower thick arm is determined by the relationship between the rear end of the torsion bar and the position of the cross member. I...

Re: Lower trunnion

Richard
You quote using two stepped washers 'as normal'.
Only one stepped washer is used for the 'normal' fitment of a torsion bar into the Minor cross member and that is fitted to the rear face of the cross member.
I do not want anyone thinking they are missing/deficient a stepped washer.

Re: Lower trunnion

The horseshoe washers (Pt No: AAA1484) are there so the torsion bar can be withdrawn rearwards through the cross member if removal is required. If the torsion bar needs to removed I will always remove it forwards after the suspension has been disengaged. Strange that two horse shoe washers were fitt...

Re: Lower trunnion

As above. The fully flat face of the thrust washer should face the trunnion. The chamfered face towards the suspension arms. The Marina/Ital which uses the same type of lower front suspension (same size dia trunnion pin but the swivel has a larger thread) - has in the BL wksp manual AKD7555 page 60....

Re: MG Metro cam and 12G295 head related query

For information:- The 12G295 head has a combustion chamber of 28.3cc whilst the 948cc Minor has a combustion chamber of 24.5cc. The 1098cc Minor fitted with the 12G202 head has a combustion chamber of 26.1cc. It is usual to skim the 12G295 head by 0.060" when fitting to a 948cc or 1098cc Minor ...

Re: MG Metro cam and 12G295 head related query

Looking behind the over-stamp numbers the original stamping indicates that it was (and may still be) a Piper HR270 camshaft.

Mixing up the numbers somewhat the numbers could have been miss stamped and should read Piper HR285/2 camshaft.

Re: MG Metro cam and 12G295 head related query

This is the process I use when I check for absolute TDC - I bring the piston up to assumed TDC and then turn the crankshaft through 20 degrees forward - note the distance travelled down by the piston on the dial gauge. Bring piston back to assumed TDC and turn crankshaft 20 degrees backwards - note ...

Whilst the photo shows the needle roller first motion shaft bearing the orientation in the rear of the crankshaft is the same whether it be a plain bush or needle roller.[frame]Image[/frame]

Re: MG Metro cam and 12G295 head related query

Full and correct TDC can only be found by using a dial gauge and a timing disc. When the piston is at assumed TDC the crankshaft can still turn through several degrees without the piston seemingly to up or down the bore. If the camshaft timing is to be correct - true TDC has to be determined. I am n...

Re: MG Metro cam and 12G295 head related query

The set up that you have installed should improve the performance markedly. Timing with the dot on the cam pulley and the mark on the crankshaft pulley aligned is more than satisfactory. You do not need an imperial dial gauge as it make absolutely no difference whether you measure the piston TDC or ...

Re: Crankshaft tail/spigot bush

Mark The thick flange block is the most sought after 1275cc Midget/Sprite engine block and usually commands a premium price when offered for sale. The EN40B spec crankshaft was the original specification as the original 1275cc Midget/Sprite engine was built to virtually the same specification as the...

Re: Size of conrod bearing

If the crankshaft bearing is undersize the undersize will be marked on the rear of the bearing i.e. 0.030
If there is no additional number to the part number I would suggest that the bearing/shell/journal is standard.

Re: Crankshaft tail/spigot bush

Mark Firstly what engine number prefix do you have as there are two spigot bushes listed for the 1275cc engine. They are: Pt No: 1A1559.............. early 12CC engines. Pt No: AHU1026............ late 12CC/12CE & 12V engines. There is also a needle roller bush listed under Pt No: AHU1026A What ...
