Yes, the smaller of the two terminals on the dynamo is the 'F' or 'field' terminal. Flash it with a wire taken from the non-earth battery post (in your case, the negative terminal, as your car is +ive earth - just like Phil says). Remove the F and D wires from the dynamo (tape them off, to be safe)...

But let me just check that! I put a cable on the positive connection on the battery, which is Earth on my car. Then after disconnecting both terminals on the dynamo, just brush the other end of the cable over the smaller terminal on the dynamo. Is that right? Just going off previous forum posts here...

I've tried flashing the windings, as you advised, but made no difference, unfortunately.

Thanks MOJ I did clean the terminals yesterday, but they all seemed fine anyway. As you said though, it's often something like that but unfortunately this time it Didn't make any positive difference. Should the Dynamo still spin as a motor with the ignition switched off? Mine does.

I tried to run the Dynamo as a motor, it does spin freely, but not what I would consider whizzing around. Not really sure how fast it's supposed to be spinning really

The points on the right coil of the regulator don't move, certainly don't close.
Does that mean my Dynamo is bust?
I've taken the brushes out today, cleaned the commutator, plenty of meat on the brushes, they move freely, springs are good.

Good point about the earth pathway being disturbed.
Simple but often overlooked, as I did!

Also, I'm trying to check Dynamo, but how do you know which terminals are D and F?
I see the terminals, one bigger than the other, but which is which?
