Re: car died whilst warm now won't restart
I have had sudden loss of power like this and it was failure of the rotor arm. Obviously check all leads from coil to distributor cap and cap to spark plugs are properly connected. Also check there is a spark from the coil to the distributor cap by placing the disributor cap end end of the king lead...

Re: Temporary ignition warning light problem
Connections all good, but dynamo now sometimes doesn't run at all...............it is knackered. I will bin it. I did do the 'run as a motor' test while it was in the car, as well as measuring voltage output, and sometimes it didn't run then either. I just thought cleaning it up might have helped, s...

Re: Temporary ignition warning light problem
I cleaned up the old dynamo inside and it DOES run as a motor, but not at a consistent speed. Sometimes quite fast, then slow. Erratic is the word.
I guess its not worth keeping as a spare?

Re: Engine noise (video with audio included)
Best get it seen to. My big ends went all of a sudden.........all was fine, then one day out for a drive a knocking noise developed which grew steadily more noisy and alarming. In the end I had to be towed home
But its not a difficult fix with the sump off.

Did you replace the oil in the carb dashpot? Lack of oil there will give running problems.........

Re: Temporary ignition warning light problem
Thank you guys, I will try that. But, although it might run as a motor, is it giving maximum performance? The ultimate test would be some sort of meter test to measure the level of output, maybe running it with an electric drill to simulate the fan belt. Could be good fun! But I don't know how to wi...

Re: Temporary ignition warning light problem
It is strange. But then, electricity is strange stuff. Perhaps some electrical wizard will come along to answer. In the meantime, back to the old dynamo: Given the brushes (and springs) are good, I'm guessing one or other of the windings has failed in some way. BUT (vain hope maybe) if I clean the c...

Re: Temporary ignition warning light problem
Hmmmm....that is an interesting thought. There is one conundrum though.........Disregarding the old control box for the moment, the contacts on the NEW control box remained closed when the ignition was turned off, but now separate EVERY TIME on turning off the ignition since the new dynamo was fitte...

Re: Temporary ignition warning light problem
Moral of this story is don't ASSUME anything............. I checked connections....all OK. So I fitted a new control box.......same problem! So........where I went wrong was, because I had a charging problem about four months ago and had checked the dynamo (which was fine) I ASSUMED the dynamo was s...

Dynamo Terminals
Here's an easy one!
On the dynamo, is the larger of the two terminals the 'D' terminal, and the smaller one the 'F' terminal?
Thanks,
Pete

Re: Temporary ignition warning light problem
Pah! I cleaned up the cut out points with fine glasspaper and all worked OK for a couple of days - except it took more than usual revving to get the light to go out, but when it did go out, everything behaved as normal, light stayed out even on tickover. But today the red light won't go out at all, ...

Waxing Window Rubbers
Hello,
My copy of Staton Abbey's book "The Book of the Morris Minor 1000" says that "Wax polish can....be used to brighten the rubber mouldings around the windows and windscreen."
Anyone tried this? Might it stop black marks appearing on rags when I'm cleaning windows?
Thanks,
Pete

Re: The Changing Status of the Minor
It was great when you could get easily a decent second hand Minor locally, instead of having to search the length and breadth of the country........... I'm too young to have ever bought one brand new! I remember an old guy once stopped to speak to me about my (previous) Minor: "Now thass what I...

Roy, it came from ESM................yes, some parts just aren't as good as they should be. These units SHOULD work for decades - like they did in the good old days..........I will have another look at it.

Re: Temporary ignition warning light problem
Oh dear..............has anyone else suffered a dodgy new control box? Its taken me 15 years to gradually restore my car and I don't want it burnt out now
