Re: Non standards wheels?
LP936 are van wheels with the extra width on the outside of the wheel. They will look slightly deeper dish than standard van wheels, and obviously deeper than standard saloon wheels. They allow you to fit a wider tyre (available from usual suppliers) which is good for safety and handling. They are a...

Re: Replacing Engine mounts
This is my own solution to the problem, after following the workshop manual. Someone more experienced may have an easier way to do it.... Because of the angle the mounts sit and their protruding studs, the rubber mounts need to move inwards to remove from the towers. This can't happen because the en...

Re: Engine mount replacement
Interesting! I bought and fitted some ESM ones. They are too hard. I then received a call from ESM, saying sorry, we have sent you the wrong ones, which are the same as the others supply, let us send you some replacements which we have had specially made. These latest ones feel noticeably softer, bu...

Re: Double valve springs
Many thanks chaps! You are correct that I had it imprinted in my head to not use double springs! It was only after reading another discussion I realised that double springs may not be the single spring plus an extra. The engine runs fine, still running-in so only up to 3000rpm lately. I will keep an...

Double valve springs
Hi all, When I fitted my recon 12G940, which came with double valve springs, I removed the inner spring and then fitted the head. It has suddenly occurred to me that this may have been a stupid idea... Can anyone explain what is or what may be the consequences? Is it possible to remove the caps with...

Re: Engine mount replacement
If not ESM are the softest I have found. My BM ones fitted are too hard. Purchased 8months ago maybe.
NOS would be great but I don't think club spares have any, I did ask Brian at the time.
Edd
PS have a good look first, tired may not be knackered! They will be lovely and soft now I wager

Re: spigot bush fit
Not 100% what the problem is, it only has to go over the end of the first motion shaft? Are you sure it's tapped fully home in the crank tail? I would imagine it has deformed slightly when tapping it in, if you did not have a correctly sized shaft with shoulder to drift it home. I didn't! I used an ...

Re: Moggie engine head scratcher
3rd for running lean! Is it standard carb? Are the symptoms different when engine is cold and warm? Ask your friendly local garage to stick the gas analyser in the exhaust so you can set the carb properly. Mine now requires a lot more choke than it used to, so if I put the choke in too early it has ...

Re: rear dampers - advice
Great beginner job to do on a minor! Really straightforward. Do expect to replace drop arms, but when I did mine the new arms available were terrible quality so don't chuck your old ones away! Changing the oil can make a real difference to handling. dont really need to jack the rear of the car up, b...

Front canister breather - repro rubbish?
Hi all, The canister breather that came with my engine was broken at the brazed joint between the tappet plate and the neck that leads to the canister. I repaired it beautifully with epoxy putty, which lasted all of 5 minutes. Stage 2, bought another off internet auction, an hours work dragging all ...

Re: Engine vibration.
Checked the gearbox mounts? Mine has a vibration that kicks in around 55mph when everything resonates together and makes a hell of a racket! I would imagine if it were crank you would have noticed on assembly, when I built mine I could spin the crank with all main caps torqued down, it would rotate ...

Re: Setting static timing with no reference
Hi all, Just a quick update as to the minispares destributor. Mechanic has set it to 24degrees advance for best idle and running, no pinking etc. Remember that my TDC pulley mark was made by eye so some 'flexibility' there! I am not sure it drives any better than the old one but I will be running it...

Tuning HIF38 for a 1098 - worth bothering?
Morning all! My 12G940, 1098 has a HIF38 fitted. Currently I have done NOTHING to tune the airflow of the carb as per Vizard, i.e. smooth entry to carb mouth. The vacuum offtake to manifold pokes into it which must disrupt flow, nor have I port matched so there is probably a step from manifold to he...

Re: Rocker cover cap
I just dropped my car in Friday for MOT and a look over the new engine by a mechanic who did his apprenticeship on minors, and spent the next 20 years building race engines. I have a tappet canister breather plumbed direct to HIF38 vacuum intake, with vented cap as per the 'general' consensus of thi...

Re: Grumpy engine steady
Putting the head on recently was the first time I have ever remembered to put that bracket on first, I always forget. As it is the end nut, removal and replacement should be ok. If your stud is long enough, flip the bracket and put it on top with a 2nd nut. Or whizz the head off for an inspection an...

Would look pretty smart on a classic minor filter box!
The manifold cutting does work, but probably best left until other mods. Cutting the cast iron will also make the biggest mess you have ever seen! My entire face bar goggles was black as coal.

Re: 1000 Air filter modification
Will make it louder! You could cut your combined manifold, removing the inlet section and fit a classic mini alloy manifold, they are pretty cheap and most will have a vacuum take-off. Assuming you don't have a servo you could use that for the rocker breather? Unless others have tried and found that...

Haha ok, I do not think I've fully grasped the concept yet!
So the circuit is not open/closed in remotely the same way?
I will try and borrow a timing light.
Thanks,
Edd

Re: Setting static timing with no reference
Just to revive... If I buy an electronic distributor (no points), when setting static timing do I use a 12v bulb tester to know when contacts are open/closed? And then set the timing by ear as per usual? I'm going to try one of the minispares modern distributors that they recurve themselves for mode...
