If you study the design of the pump (detailed in most manuals for the Minor) you'll see that there isn't really much to go wrong. The symptoms you describe are usually the points, but could also be a stiffened diaphragm, although this is very unlikely. As others note, try lightly dressing the points...

A good friend of mine used ot work as a highly trained engineer with BT. Took voluntary redundancy, and now works part time for Sainsbury's. He's fitter, more relaxed, less stressed, and happier than ever before. Of course, there are still idiots in charge, and stupid decisions, but he lets it all w...

As shown by Roger, me, and one or two others, you can fit the correct colour leather and will tone OK with the vinyl. The only thing to watch is that the vinyl will be x years old and so faded, the leather will be a perfect match for NEW vinyl, but I'm sure that any mismatch will be less annoying th...

Like Roger, my interiors are all vinyl, EXCEPT the door pulls which are leather, used every day, and show no sign of wear after three years use. They match in colour perfectly, and feel, well, like leather - the vinyl was made to feel as close to leather as possible, not to feel "plasticy".

Most trim is made by Newton Commercial and supplied both direct and via the normal traders. However, there is some cheaper stuff about. Good quality vinyl should last at least five years, so ask for replacement. For real longevity, pay a little bit more and get leather - it is worth it.

Hi Santa, good to see you here. Hope you enjoy both the show and this site. We did three and a half days at the show a few years ago, and certainly didn't get bored. You can always take a train into Birmingham and look at the city and shops. Hope to see you again soon.

The water should be coloured blue or green or yellow or red; but if it's been in the car a long time, then it will probably just be rusty. also, the colour is no guarantee of the amount - different ratios of anti-freeze to water give different amounts of protection. For example, 20% = -5, 50% = -25....

The filming at the "Manor House" and barn was done at a farmhouse opposite where I used to live - every day I drove down the road shown in the pictures above. I spent an hour on set, and, apart from meeting the cast (who I didn't recognise as I didn't watch the program at that time!), I in...

If you're using standard kingpins then you should have an adapter with the inner bearing. Sold as a kit by most Minor suppliers, but if you got the whole lot second hand then it could have been left behind on the old kingpins. Quite possible that when you fitted the new speedo, the inner part of the cable was pulled out from the drive socket at the gearbox end. Unscrew the gearbox end of the cable, re-seat the inner, and then reconnect the screw fitting. Other than that, broken cable as above.

Commonest causes are indeed a sticking cylinder or cable (or two!) or any combination thereof. As suggested above, jack up rear and see if you can turn the wheels by hand when the foot brake and then the handbrake are on.

I'm looking at the factory produced service parts list, page J2 and facing plate. It shows clearly the component parts of the TRE, including the grease nipple. There is NO washer under the nipple. Moreover, I would argue that the thread on the nipple is not long enough to allow the fitting of a wash...

Most of the suppliers who advertise in Minor Matters can send aerosol cans or touch-up pots; if you need bigger quantities then any automotive paint supplier should be able to help.

It's also worth checking the blades and cleaning the screen with toothpaste (yes, really). Old blades and a dirty screen can bind and slow the motor. Toothpaste is a very mild abrasive that cleans the glass beautifully. Use a cloth with circular motions and then rinse well with clean water. Much bet...

When I needed a socket to shift a dynamo bracket and was parked outside Halfords, the chap in the shop said that as Minor owners tended to do all their own work, it was branch (and possibly company) policy to give them a trade card, just show your MMOC card and sound knowledgeable.

Lots of possibilities, some good, some bad. Start by having a look at the carb and manifold. Is everything secure, or are there any loose nuts or bolts? Do you have access to a compressions tester? Remove the plugs and check readings on each cylinder and report back. Timing is NOT difficult, but che...

Look at the section on front suspension. You'll see the uprights / kingpins / swivel pins. At the top and bottom of each is the swivel joint, also known as trunnion. The grease nipple for the bottom one is underneath. The one for the top faces towards the rear. It's best to remove the wheel to get g...
