Is customjob really suggesting that someone who completes the restoration of their 1903 Benz (or whatever) will have to modify it to meet the requirements of the Basic IVA test? Even though its age would mean it never had to comply again? Reference please?

Re: Morris Minor Postal Van trafficators
Lucas Part number 54050A, which is a Model SE100, with black arm cover and case. It's just a 54045 movement, which is an SF80, in a case. You probably wouldn't lose too many points in the concours if you used a 54052A, which is like a 54050A but with movement 54044 which has a Staybrite arm cover (p...

Re: VED Classic Exempt Possible Problem/Query
...the 'exempt' car needs to HAVE a valid MOT at November, to be exempt in future..... Do you have a reference for this? I've not been able to find anything about the implementation of what was announced in May. so if I let the Mk VI MoT expire next week (because I'm not expecting to need to use it...

Re: blue smoke and mot
Forgetting for a moment the discussion about whether Rome can be built, or a Minor engine overhauled, in a day, let's go back to the original problem: will Jane's car fail its MoT? The tester's manual gives the Method of Inspection as: Raise the engine speed to around 2500 rpm or half the maximum en...

I think that if it had correct wheels, trims, and tyres on it would look fine. Wheels from the Fisher Price collection are always a risk, visually.

Re: water pump leak
I agree with Roy on this one: an SU low pressure pump uses a very light return spring, as the petrol will virtually syphon out of the pump on the delivery stroke. Most alternative pumps seem to have much higher delivery pressure unless you add yet another thing to go wrong or leak - a pressure regul...

Re: Thread info for gearstick plate bolts
Les and I both meant that only the top few (damaged) threads might need drilling out, depending on how badly damaged they are and how confident the OP is that he can keep a tap upright. I think that a Helicoil or similar is a bit OTT for this, particularly if you really are going to whack it in with...

Re: Long run improves running - why?
Well, we've had all the technical explanations, most of which I find unconvincing, so let's add "because after driving a Moggy for 200 miles you're as deaf as a post, so you no longer hear the noises that previously held you back from keeping your hoof down regardless".

Re: Thread info for gearstick plate bolts
I'd have expected it to be a coarse thread, too, but the Moss catalogue shows all three set screws as 1/4" UNF x 5/8" on the later gearboxes, and a part number I can't recognise on the 803. Since the OP didn't share with us what car he's on about, we'll have to assume he's got the nous to ...

Should have made it clearer: mole wrench on the valve body, stillsons to turn the lid.
And I should have added "cold chisel" to remind us of steering wheel nuts....

Re: water pump leak
If the forked arm of the float chamber is bent in the wrong place, it doesn't push vertically on the valve. This can make it jam in either open or closed positions. Another reason for the valve sticking is if it's been installed with the wrong tools. I believe SU (Burlen) sell a box spanner, or you ...

Re: water pump leak
On the question of fuel level in the float chamber: I've adjusted several carbs where the fuel level was, in practice, too high. Bear in mind that the "drill bit" method only sets the position of the top of the float, and you're not actually checking the petrol level. So if, for instance, ...

Google for "lucas generator and control box tests" and download one of the free copies of this early 60s Lucas publication.

Re: what amp for earth wire?
"Chocolate blocks", or insulated terminal strips, have their place: but it's not on a car. Especially not if they're hanging in mid-air, supported by their cables, with or without a few turns of insulating tape wrapped round their unhelpful shape. I dislike them even more than I dislike pr...

Re: what amp for earth wire?
By far the most common size of spade connector on these cars is 1/4". Male spade connectors aren't used much at all: offhand, I can only think of one fairly common usage, and that's where the ignition coil has one male and one female connector to avoid mixing up the + and - (or SW and CB) conne...

Re: Wiper arm/spindle fixing
There's one make of wiper arm that incorporates a wedge that is tightened by a posi-headed machine screw. These will clamp on to worn spindles quite successfully, I've found. You may have to hunt around a bit to find them on an autojumble stall. Sorry it's a poor photo, but here's one of mine:[frame...

Re: what amp for earth wire?
Lucar has become a bit of a "hoover" word for spade terminals. Have a look at the Autosparks selection, where you'll see that you should really match both connector width (obviously), and the cable size. You can get away with smaller cables in terminals designed for larger ones, but they w...

Re: Starting/Charging Problems...
Free download of the Lucas manual here I thought it would be easier to read the Lucas official version than for me to try to paraphrase it, but here goes: Liammonty has conflated two separate tests. If you remove both connections from the dynamo, then measure the voltage at the big (D) terminal, the...
