Re: Help for old Newbie please

Hi Mike

Thanks for the info on unleaded heads. I gain a bit more knowledge every time I come on this message board, it's great.

Re: Help for old Newbie please

Hi Budgie. It sounds fabulous. Hopefully I'll see you around. Are you planning on going to any local shows in the near future? I was interested to hear you mention the unleaded head. There seems to be two lines of thought, some say there is no problem with the original head using unleaded whilst oth...

Re: Help for old Newbie please

Thanks for advice SteveClem.

Hi Budgie
I only live 1/2 a mile away from the garden centre. I'll keep an eye out for you. What sort of condition was your's in when you bought it?

Re: Help for old Newbie please

Thanks Blaketon. I'll watch out for the 'home made' convertibles as I am aware that the chassis should be strengthened if the top is cut off.

Re: Help for old Newbie please

Hi Blaketon Thanks for your comments and advice. Ideally (assuming I'm successful with the engine) I would like to buy a convertible but I realise these are few and far between. With regards to up-rating the engine I would be open to anything as long as it doesn't change the distinctive sound of the...

Thanks Phil, that's a great idea.

I love this messageboard, it's like having your own personal mentor.

Phil, If you're ever back in this neck of the woods look me up so I can buy you a curry and a beer.

Re: Help for old Newbie please

When I get the engine I want to test run it so was looking on ebay and found the following: 4 wheel 360 degree steel engine cradle vehicle 450KG mechanic Hilka - £31.99. It says it's for storing and moving an engine. I just wondered - is there any reason it couldn't be used to run the engine also. I...

Re: Help for old Newbie please

Gosh it's a small world, taffys everywhere. I've just got back from watching the Swans beat Leicester so I'm a jolly Jack at the moment, certainly a lot happier than yesterday after the rugby. Although I wasn't as downhearted as usual because I thought it was a fantastic match to watch. Congratulati...

Re: Help for old Newbie please

Phil, you're a gentleman and a star. Thank you. I've agreed to buy an engine and gearbox from someone in Scotland (yes, 8 hours away) which I'm picking up a week on Friday. I't's not quite as crazy as it sounds because I'm taking my daughter to see the Scotland v Wales rugby international that weeke...

Re: Help for old Newbie please

I've just discovered the workshop manual specifies torque settings in lb. ft or kg. m. but the Halfords website specifies NM. Can anyone advise which torque wrench is appropriate 3/8" drive with 8NM to 60NM or 1/2" drive with 40NM to 200NM. I tried using an online calculator and that conve...

Re: Help for old Newbie please

Hi Les All comments are welcome. It's because of what you said that I highlighted the issue of commitment in my opening post. I realise it's a massive commitment and that's why I need to prove myself on an engine first before committing to having a rusty old wreck (with all due respect to Morris Min...

Re: Help for old Newbie please

Thanks Phil.

I'll start looking on ebay. My birthday is in March so I can 'help' my kids decide what to buy me.

I like the idea of being a recycled teenager as long as I don't have to go on twitter.

Re: Help for old Newbie please

Thank you Mark. I really appreciate you taking the time to give advice. The reason I'm starting with the engine is that I'm more comfortable with mechanics but have no experience at all at bodywork or welding. With regard to age, if I'm honest, my view has always been, irrespective of my age at the ...
