Re: First Time Engine Rebuild

Yes I read about the bread trick! I must admit that I can't imagine finding dowel a tight enough fit to not let grease squeeze past. I think I will give it a try. I am saying this but haven't actually checked the bush yet. Does it tend to wear? I do have a new one for comparison, but I will avoid re...

Re: First Time Engine Rebuild

From casual browsing on the forum, I've realised I have not replaced the crank tail bush. I will have to check tomorrow what state it is in/if there is even one in there! Is this replaceable with the engine assembled? It's not mentioned in the Haynes.... Thanks, Edd EDIT - I've found an old forum po...

Re: First Time Engine Rebuild

Thanks Phil!

They came off no problem, I will renew the bushes when replacing.

Cheers,

Re: First Time Engine Rebuild

I would like to replace the bolts holding the engine mount towers on, as two have stripped and will need cutting out. However the back-corner two are obstructed by the tie-bar bush, blocking removal from below. Can I just remove the tie-bar, counting the turns for alignment, do I need to support the...

Re: First Time Engine Rebuild

No going back now!!! [frame] http://mmoc.org.uk/mbimage.php?src=1477935877_16872 [/frame] It was a PIG to get out, not enough space to pull it forwards off the spline to then also clear the front crossbar of the car. To go back in I think I will use the load leveller bar, we didn't use it this time ...

Re: First Time Engine Rebuild

Hose tail fitting! Knew I'd get there in the end. Although it appears that actually they are all bsp. I guess the minispares one will do.

Thanks,

Re: First Time Engine Rebuild

Yes! Sort of, I had found that but it seems quite expensive for what it is. Also not entirely clear how to tighten it up into the thread. Sure I found some Ebay options before, but cannot for the life of me remember what they were called.

Re: First Time Engine Rebuild

No going back now, front of the car is off! Can anyone remind me what the vacuum take-off noggin is called for the inlet manifold. Standard mini alloy manifold, I can't remember the name or the thread that brings up loads of them on eBay. Also any tips on hoisting much appreciated? I have a levellin...

Re: What should I do now

Welcome to the club! I think parcel shelves were standard fit, I removed mine it was annoying. Someone may be able to post dims for a template then just make one out of thin ply. The end trim could probably be done by wrapping pipe insulation in appropriately coloured vinyl? A good first job is chan...

Re: First Time Engine Rebuild

Thanks Phil, I reckon it'll take 2.

Which material should I get? The Payen set had the usual composite type, eBay has various materials including an alloy one. Shall I just go for cheap and cheerful?

Re: First Time Engine Rebuild

Phil that is a very good idea! I will give it a try, hopefully that will give enough thickness, as the gap is pretty big.

Many thanks all,

Re: First Time Engine Rebuild

Trial fitting the manifolds, I have now noticed that the manifold flanges are different thicknesses, around 1mm thicker on the new alloy manifold [frame] http://mmoc.org.uk/mbimage.php?src=1476637128_16872 [/frame] Which of these is my best option do we think? Easiest: make up the slack with half wa...

Re: First Time Engine Rebuild

Finally cracking on!! Head has been on and torqued up, blu-tac on valves showed plenty of clearances. However I stripped nuts on two rocker pedestals? Tightening to 25lbft. New studs and nuts from minispares. Any thoughts why? I will go back to old studs and try and dig some nuts out from somewhere....

Re: Garage recommendation?

I stumbled across them whilst working in Chorlton, and since then have driven back up from London 3 out of the last 4 years to have work done on my car. I've found Paul's work first class, from welding to mechanics to upholstery. They usually have a couple of restored cars in there for sale that you...

Re: First Time Engine Rebuild

Thanks Phil!

I will order that pipe if I fail in bending my other original one. Link much appreciated, I am still not 100% familiar with old-style threads.

Cheers,

Re: First Time Engine Rebuild

Hi Phil, Thanks for the reply. I think I will file the rocker arms down a small amount, and then leave it as good as I can get it, if you agree with BMC that the current set-up is tolerable in a road engine? RE the pipe, I will have another go at bending my 2nd pipe then, if no joy I will buy the fl...

Re: First Time Engine Rebuild

Hi BMC, Thanks for your response. RE the rockers, should I file the arm or the pillar? The arms have a small amount of bush poking out each side which could be filed, but I am conscious of friction surfaces as there are no washers between arm and pillar on the re-con set, which I believe is standard...

Re: First Time Engine Rebuild

2nd issue: Refitting the pipe from the new filter head to block, there was a very minor amount of stress on the pipe. I tightened the filter-head end first to ensure that this went on straight, the banjo end at the block then required angling maybe 1mm towards the block in order to eliminate stress....

Re: First Time Engine Rebuild

Hi all, finally back in the garage this week! Cracking on with the final touches to the rebuild, but I have a run in to a couple more snags I could use some advice on. 1. The reconditioned rockers I bought were not the sintered kind as photographed from ESM (typically photo has now changed!) but the...

Re: Pockets for 940 heads

Those look huge! Mine are the shape of a valve just poking out a bit. Those have had the shape blended to form a curve. Maybe to remove material for CR purposes?

Desperate to get that engine finished just so busy at the moment.
