Re: Sudden lack of power
Good idea. The plugs were lighting but about the right colour. I checked the manifold bolts and one of the nuts were a little loose and I also tightened the bolts holding down the carb and the air filter to the carb. Went out for a short spin and all seemed fine with one stutter. This morning within...

Sudden lack of power
I've suddenly got a sudden lack of power on acceleration but it's intermittent. It doesn't sound like a misfire and the engine doesn't stop. It idles fine and revs fine but under load it holds back. I've got a Distributer dr capacitor and the points haven't closed up. Any ideas? This happened at the...

Mechanic in Enfield?
Does anyone have a recommendation for a mechanic / garage in Enfield, North London who understands Morris Minors and cars of a similar age. Recently found the new owner of my local garage didn't understand how to adjust the brakes on my Bedford CA. Now I have a clutch issue on my Minor. No modern ca...

Re: Clutch release bearing
Points taken. I expect I do about 3000 miles, or a bit more, a year. The gear stick doesn't do anything funny. The noise is just at the biting point and there's a feeling through the pedal that things aren't quite working as they should. Moving away is snatchy. The sudden lack of power is when the e...

Clutch release bearing
Lifting off the clutch pedal has suddenly started to produce a grinding noise - sounds like a bag of bolts and a jerky acceleration. There's been no clutch slipping and the clutch was changed only 20 years ago. Could it be the release bearing giving up? Also, I've suddenly got an intermittent lack o...

Re: Fuel pump?
That seems to have done the trick. Driven about 40 miles in the last couple of and it's not cut out once. I shall have to have a look at the colour of the plugs now. Can't believe I've been driving this Minor for more than 20 years and no memory of having ever checked the tightness of the manifold n...

Re: Fuel pump?
No cutting out today but I did notice the spark plugs were white and the manifold nuts were all loose. Perhaps this was the problem all along.

Fuel pump?
My original spec early 1000 started cutting out when coming to a stop or if driving I press in the clutch and hold it there. Driving and accelerating don't seem to be affected. I thought it my be a fuel pump problem because things improved for a while when I cleaned the points. Rob reckons not becau...

Misfire and white spark at the plugs
I thought changing an ht lead would solve my misfire problem when there was clearly no spark on one plug but maybe I had two problems at the same time. The engine runs fine for a few minutes then develops a misfire and the spark at the plugs is very pale. Is this a condenser problem, perhaps? I didn...

Re: Front brakes binding
After examination, I can see the spring on the end of. The master cylinder is in place and doing it's job. I've taken off one drum and it's clear that the piston in one of the two cylinders isn't going back. Should I remove the post on and clean and grease it with the red rubber grease? I have an an...

Re: Front brakes binding
Yes, that makes sense. Not the brake pedal return Spring then? Inside the chassis leg? Where's the return Spring accessed from?

Re: Front brakes binding
It is possible they're too tightly adjusted. But, I don't think I've adjusted them since last summer and I it's only in the last couple of weeks I've noticed the problem. It got worse today. I try to use the car at least once a week for a round trip commute of about 15 miles. I'll try having a look ...

Re: Front brakes binding
I wondered about the flexible hoses but there's a braided one on one side that's only a couple of years old. The other one is much older. I wonder if one collapsed hose could effect both front brakes.

Re: Front brakes binding
It's been two years since brake fluid was changed. An hour later and both wheels are turning more freely. Must be the cylinders, then but It seems unusual that there's suddenly a problem on both sides at the same time.

Front brakes binding
Noticed recently that when rolling my saloon comes to halt as if the brakes have bee plied but today the pedal is hard and jacking up the front of the car shows that both front wheels are not spinning freely. Any ideas what could be causing this before I start taking the w heels and hubs off? Standa...

Done it! Time for a quick test drive. Already seems to be starting and running better than ever. Fantastically satisfying stuff working on a Minor!

Re: Changing the distributor
Making progress? There was continuity across the points when open in both the distributor doctor set and the original set that were both of the two separate parts style, rather than the all of one piece modern ones. I think there's supposed to be a fine washer between the two parts where they fit ov...

Re: Changing the distributor
There's a spark when I touch the low tension lead on the outside of the distributor so, I imagine, there must be a fault inside the distributor. Must be the ponts? (Also the ones pre fitted?) there's no break in the LT wire inside. Can't figure it out. Grr!

Re: Changing the distributor
You mean the low tension lead? Should that spark as I touch it against the dizzy body? Can two sets of points go wrong? The first set were the ones ready fitted so I don't think it's the way they're assembled.
