Thanks Phil - two questions, what's the best way of getting the centre main top shell out?
Working under the car on the road, so space is at a premium! Which leads to the second question (as working on it engine-in), is it ok to replace main shells when front and rear could be just as worn?

Re: Bearing shell condition
Just checked the clearance on the centre main and it's 0.050mm, so within tolerance. Question is, will new shells do it, or is it regrind time?

Re: Bearing shell condition
Well, I think I've found the issue, centre main looks like below. Assume this is a crank regrind given the condition?

Bearing shell condition
Afternoon all, Still trying to get to the bottom of the knock/rattle at certain revs I dropped the sump and took the first two bearings out, until I had to stop yesterday as it was just too hot! The bearings are marked as 0.02 oversize, which corresponds to the crank journal measuring 1.605-1.610 on...

Re: Charles Ware Liquidator Statement
very sad indeed, looking at companies house they had liabilities of £1m vs assets of next to nothing! Looking at the list of creditors, it's also going to do some damage to some small, but critical, morrie suppliers - Woodies is owed £7k, Newton Commercial £10, ESM over £30k, and their own parts dep...

Re: highway code
Pedestrians will be walking into the roads like lemmings. They already do anyway in some places..... The more concerning one is that cyclists are now allowed to cycle two abreast, for their own safety........ All this will do is encourage more arrogance and stupidity on their part..... But, ...

Re: highway code
Other changes include cyclists being encouraged to cycle in the middle of the lane, instead of sticking to the left; and the fact that even if a dedicated cycle lane has been provided, cyclists are not obliged to use it. :o Madness. sounds correct to me - the whole concept of car owners paying for ...

Re: Engine grumble
Thanks all for replies. Correct that I've changed the head to be correct 1098 - the grumbling was still present on the 948 too unfortunately. I've set the timing to a retarded enough level to remove the grumble, but it's so far back that the car struggles to start and performance is poor (compared t...

Engine grumble
Hi, and a happy new year to you all! After replacing the head ony 1098 (per other threads) I'm still getting the grumble fromy engine at specific revs and throttle. Can only really describe it as similar to a drill on hammer setting going through brick (although at a much lower loudness) Have upload...

that sounds v v extreme to me. have a look in Minor Matters to see if anyone advertising in there is local to you. depending on the level / extensiveness of rust i'd be thinking about £4k max

Re: block identification
probably a poor description, but the 1098 head didn't have the large "clips/circlips" on the top of each valve stem, per this link: https://www.morrisminorspares.com/engine-c14/ohv-engine-c16/cylinder-head-1098cc-lead-free-reconditioned-197-50-175-00-surcharge-included-click-here-for-more-...

yup, old gasket was 100% ok. pistons and head had quite heavy carbon deposits, but aside from that all seemed ok.

Re: head gasket?
hi all, so, i completely changed the head on the engine (per the other thread on here), and whilst doing discovered that it was a 948 head on a 1098 block. I've only lightly run the engine round the block and haven't been on a big run, but it appears i can now advance the ignition much further than ...

i'm a firm believer that hydrogen fuel cells are the future for transport. None of the issues around mining for minerals, but clearly need enough renewable energy to make the hydrogen and technology for cells - quite a way off unfortunately

Re: block identification
i think they are, yes. when re-installing the rocker assembly moving from the 948 head, i had to tighten up the adjusting screws to get to 12 and 15 thou on the inlet and exhaust valves accordingly. also had differing circlips - 948 had split pin type whilst 1098 has small circlips as far as i could...

I think it's been confirmed that my block is a 1098 though, so I've put everything back as it should be.
