I'd actually put money on the fact that a bigger carb wouldn't make the slightest improvement. The exhasut system on the MM is an embarrasement at best and is, IMHO, the biggest destroyer of power output on the car. A bigger carb might allow more air in but it couldn't get it out fast enough. A 4 br...

Thicker steel for the leaves and a larger diameter bush will do that. I looked at the lowlight and the holes in the shackle plates are exactly 2.390 inches between centres. There is about 8mm between chassis and spring eye on saggy springs and signs of the chassis being lightly hammered after years ...

Much more fun to make your own panels rather than spending £15 on repro ones. My neighbour lost his job and didn't have the money to sort out his MOT test and the sills were reeeeeally rotten at the back. This panel took about 2 hours to make (I only have one fully working hand so it takes me a bit ...

Two things spring to mind. One is that you can get switches that operate once the oil has dropped to 25 psi (on my Midget I even have an adjustable one) and idea number 2 is to check to see that it isn't the dynamo charging lamp plonked into the oil light hole by mistake. They'll both be on whilst t...

Midget/Sprite experience shows that the system works well but the gear meshing is a bit of a worry, although I've not seen anyone state that their starter/ring-gear has suffered. The rotation rate of the Isuzu starter is at least twice that of a lucas unit, thus giving a darned good spin to an engin...

Innovate Motorsports. They make kits for data-logging the AFR against things like throttle position, MAP and RPM. Not cheap but it is the only way to tune an aeroplane engine.

I've used this wideband lambda kit for both the Mog and an aeroplane engine. Fantasticly accurate real-time data. I'm in Cardiff if you ever want to try it.

Onne. The gear teeth that rotated the head were rotten over about 40% or the range and the alloy shaft had corroded onto the plastic spacers that keep the +ve and -ve bits apart. I still need to make a pair of spacers to fit behind the bulb and then it should work. I've spent about 12 hours on it so...

Somewhat weaker and of lower power. The head is different in that the E head has a water elbow that goes straight up rather than at an angle to the radiator. Possibly there is a mismatch in the holes between the head and block either side of the hole for the distributor. The E hangs the dynamo off a...

How is it that some survive 60 years intact whilst others go so completely? Where does the water get in? It looks like they didn't even bother to get a decent coat of paint in there on this one!

Very true. The engine is actually an 'E' engine so not really worth pepping up. I've noticed that the lowlight has room to put a 40DCOE in there and a US company is now producing a DCOE version designed specifically for singlecarb applications whereby they cast it with only one barrel. Much easier t...

If you have the nose of the diff facing you, the stamped number is at 1/2 past 12 position, about 1 inch forwards of the flange that has the bolt holes. Large digits about 1/4 tall.

Alternatively, count the number of teeth and divide the big gear by the small gear. (ie: 9 teeth and 41 teeth)

Midget diffs in the 3.7 and 3.9 range used BTA part numbers to show the use of the more sturdy diff 'carrier', if my notes from the 1980s prove correct. I have an ATA 3.7 diff and I pulled it from a Riley 1.5 about 10 years ago. I've never noticed the difference in carrier construction. Anyone?

If you've got an old one to send me, plus a S.A.E, I can carve one for you. To be honest, I was amazed that the people who bought them didn't just get a penknife and carve their own. Takes about 1/2 hour to clean them up, carve the extra bits and paint the white bit in. The trick is to get an old on...

Bu66er! Maybe mine is from a Morris 8? Don't tell the wife! She thinks she's got an MM one. :D

Maybe I can just polish the top and grind in the 5 gear numbers with a dremel. I did the same with some 1098 gearknobs to put the 5th gear position on them. I sold a couple about 4 years ago.
