Find a suitably sized o-ring and slip it over the shaft. It worked on mine.

Re: Classic car magnetism?
Letting them past and having the opportunity to tailgate another car is an option but it is annoying when they pass you and then travel slower than you were in the first place. I had a workmate who had a habit of intimidating drivers to let him past by driving really close to them and bragging about...

Re: Even older cars can be greener..........
Going back to the original title, it would be interesting to know the cost, to the planet, difference of manufacturing a new car vs restoring an older one.

Re: What are polybushes made of?
If there is still squeaking after doing the above, have a look at the rear spring leaves, it might be them. After a couple of unsuccessful attempts to cure a rear end creak, by re-greasing the bushes with white grease, I finally had success by dealing to the dry spring leaves.

With the potential loose fuel under the bonnet that red wire beside the heater hose looks like a problem waiting to happen. Also, how long will that copper fuel pipe last with the bungy cord attached to it?

Re: HIF38 fitting diagram
While you are setting up the carb it would be best to cap off "A" and"B". This will disable the part throttle economy circuit, which leans out the mixture at high vacuum and light throttle. Working out the correct mixture setting with this in operation would be hard. When the mix...

Re: The Stanton Cropduster
I have seen this run at the Waimate street race. It really was a sight/sound that sticks in the memory. The power on oversteer was brutal and must have been terrifying to drive. It was definitely frightening to watch. I remember thinking that the hay bales we were standing behind would not be enough...

Re: Restoration Projects needed for new documentary series
This is how I got my truck project, now finished. The previous owner had started, but got the hard word from inside that "you're spending too much time out there in the garage." His partner was really happy with me when I bought the unfinished project and took it away. I think he was resig...

Re: Oil temps on a standard 1098
I have checked the gauge against a known accurate external thermometer. Not exact, but within 2 deg. The oil pressure on those really hot days held up ok. On a normal day, motor fully warmed up, at 100 kph = 60 psi, 85 deg water, 105 deg oil. This may be of some interest - http://www.minimania.com/c...

Re: Oil temps on a standard 1098
I have a semi std engine, with a 1275 head, and a gauge. The temp sender is fitted in the supply gallery to the pump, recording the temp of oil coming from the sump. The engine has had 20,000 miles since a full recondition. The thermostat is 88 deg. Oil pressure is as you would expect. Oil is either ...

Re: Pickup restoration part three
Ive tried several variations of the std 1098 air cleaner on a std 1098 car. Each variation was tested over a tank full, so it wasn't just one run. The tube acts as a silencer device, noisier without it, and gives the ability to get hot air from closer to the exhaust manifold. On another housing with...

Re: indicator stalk temptomental
It could be the wire that goes down the stalk. There may be an internal break in the copper that sometimes touches and sometimes doesn't, depending in the stalk position. It is possible to solder in a new one.
The earth contact to the stalk is made via a spring under the lamp base.

Re: hif38 carb fitted, just can't get it to run
I have one of these on mine and it runs correctly. It is connected as shown in the first photos except that I have the economy circuit connected. This can be blocked off, as shown, making the carb behave like a normal one. The vacuum connection for the distributor is next to the dashpot cover. The f...

Had the same trouble with the lower trunnion dust seals. They came from a good supplier, fitted them to truck, truck then sat in the garage for some months. After fitting the motor I went to adjust the suspension height and the brand new dust seals literally fell off. They were quite crumbly. This w...

When you get everything in place and you open the bonnet remember to check that the prop is in the locked position. It doesn't always happen on mine.

Re: Pickup restoration part three
I have just had a leak in a similar place, dripping from the backplate. When I looked more closely at this, it was apparent it was coming from between the engine block and backplate. I have replaced the gaskets in this area as they had obvious leakage signs. There was not any major sign of a leak ar...
