Re: Heater question
My late type heater on one car is terrible. Took it completely apart and flushed, fixed and resembled: Still awful. I think the heater element is a bad reproduction (certainly not original) because it has hot water going in and hot water coming out but seems to fail spectacularly at heating the air ...

Re: LED Instrument Panel Lighting
Brilliant solution there, works really well. The LEDs look good too. I'm a big fan of LEDs, but not with moggies usually as they don't have that wonderful warm glow of incandescent. Clinical blue/white doesn't really suit the utilitarian 50/60s hardware... However, the tint of those works really wel...

Glad that it sounds like nothing! I'll pull it apart and see if anything is missing.
"anti-rattle plunger" I honestly thought you were pulling my leg untill I saw the diagram.

Engine rattle, stops when gearstick is held.
Pretty much as the title describes. Getting a rattle, it sounds like it's coming from the engine (rather than the box) but it's hard to tell. No affects on anything else as far as I can tell (power etc) and it's been there for a while now. It only manifests itself on the motorway, when the engine is...

You could also try one of those motobike mufflers you slide in the end of the pipe. Can't remember what they are called though.

Re: Fuel pumps
I fitted one of these (with a regulator just to make sure the pressure was fine). I find the 'clacking' is only when there isn't any fuel going through. Once it's full it makes a very gentle clicking. You can only really feel it when you touch the pump itself. Unlike SU pumps it is constantly going ...

Really rough running. good compression.
Ok, engine went really rough, all cylinders were going. I changed the electronic distributor for an old points set but its the same as before. Checked compression: 165 to 170 throughout.
Not sure what to try next?

Re: wipers, flashers, fuel gauge, horn, brake lights not working!
If the horn doesn't work, check the interior light! You never notice it's broken and it's on the same fuse. Check the fuse is working with a multimeter/test lamp. Chances are you need to sand off some patina/oxidisation on the 40 year old contacts on the fuse box. Use some emery paper on it as sugge...

Short term insurance
Hi, Does anyone know of any short term insurance you can get? I have a drivable 'project' (once I put the petrol tank back in) that I'm only not driving because until I'm 25 (in a few months) my normal insurance choices are severely limited (it is modified with a 1275). The big problem: We're moving...

Re: Help please getting a new engine to start
The silvery thing is a stubstack, I wouldn't bother rounding the edges off the carb if you've already got one - it's doing the same job.
And no one would put the effort into machining/producing a stubstack and not drilling those holes through!

Re: Removing heater fan
I would just have flushed without dismantling - indeed without even removing it from the car. Gives you an excuse now to get a v much better Mini heater..... Several cheap on ebay - but expensive postage - but maybe you can find one close to you. I think you're right. It's nice and shiny now but I ...

Re: Removing heater fan
It wasn't working though! The thing was blocked somehow. No leaking but produced heat slower than the fan cooled it down.

Re: Removing heater fan
Put everything back together and back in. Huge leak in the heater element! Hardly touched it but its never worked well at all. Maybe clearing out the pipes just exposed the already dodgy element. Looked near new when I took it out though, very annoyed that I'm going to have to do it all again! Wish ...

Re: Electronic Ignition
I've had a-series-spares electronic ignition and found them good. They do treat their customers well. I keep my old dizzy in the boot as a spare, because the electronic ones aren't really fixable. Recommend the change though, I had about 3 Chinese condensers go (always get nos!) on the motorway and ...

Re: Need a bit of carb help
I have a facet pump with a cheap regulator and it works fine (is a hif44 mind, so it probably wants a bit higher pressures). Make sure your pump is low , ideally level with the tank. Not had any problem with mine. It shouldn't need a retune of the carb. If you are having trouble tuning it though I r...
