Re: cylinder head casting numbers
The 456 was used on the 850, 998 Mini & 948 Sprite, the 810 on 998 Mini - A+ (1980-on) and could be lead free. The combustion chamber on the 810 should actually be slightly larger than the 456 - I guess it must have been skimmed and the double springs added in an attempt to warm it up a bit.

Don't loose heart, your car is still around and you own it but it will take a little leg work to track it down.

Re: Engine cut out and backfire
I had this on one of my campers, turned out to be a loose LT lead on the coil. As described by BMC unburned fuel passed into the hot exhaust and - BANG.

Re: Push or Pull?
Pullers are more efficient than pushers but as you said there is more room in front of the rad. Since the original fan is such a small affair I don't think there will be a problem with a modern lekky fan having that bit less performance through being a pusher and yes it definitely should be wired in...

Re: Traveller wood
Yes maybe not the best comparison by me but think about how an impact would act on filler then how a proper wood frame would cope, a bit like comparing a vase with a gate post, again not a great analogy but you get my drift.
