- Topic: Are you using a 12G940 head?

The 12g940 head has bigger valves than the 12g295 - even the normal 940 is bigger, and the ones fitted to Cooper S ang early MG Metros had even bigger inlets. The combustion chamber is SMALLER than a 202 head - 21.4 cc against 26.4 for the 202, and the 295 is 28.6 if I remember correctly. So the 940...

Oh I agree about the Oselli/Howley manifold - and next time I see one on ebay for £2 be sure I will buy it !! My last two MG alloy ones cost exactly that - £ 2 each. With a half round file the corner inside the big hole has been modified extensively - and the runners carefully opened to match the bi...

I have thought about this over the years - and until recently kept a spare A series 4 syncro box to do the transfer into my spare Minor box. However - I got an offer for the Mini box (it was actually a close ratio Cooper box) and it's gone ! You will obviously need to keep the Minor input shaft - so...

Indeed it does - but it needs to be skimmed at least 100 thou to get a fair compression ratio. The block pockets take an hour to do (assuming head already off) using mounted points in an electric drill. Not difficult to do. The 940 head has bigger valves and much bigger ports - and needs no skimming !

Disagree - with the Su carb the airflow is nicely calibrated by the rise and fall of the piston - but when it reaches full open then power restriction applies. A bigger carb will still meter the air and fuel ok at all points - AND be able to flow more air due to the larger air space. Obviously the b...

The marina 12g940 head is the way to go ! It does NOT need skimming - the combustion chamber size will just nicely lift the compression ratio. You should grind small pockets in the block under the exhaust valves - you may JUST get away without doing this, but I don't advise it. It's a far better hea...

Best inlet manifold is the alloy MG Metro one - use it with the bigger carb. It should clear the sawn off exhaust manifold ok. But for a decent performance improvement you really need to change the head too. Remember - a bigger carb only gives more air at full throttle - so do you drive your Minor a...

All the facts about the 998 are going to be relevant to the 948. It's just bored out +65thou to get 998. In fact this would be a good source of flat-top pistons to get the compression ratio even higher. If you could start with a 1098 block it already has the cam bearings fitted - just use 948 crank ...

So Spridget hubs fit ok ?
Thanks Matt - and others. So is that a definite then - Spridget front hubs go straight on the Minor stub axle ? I am intending to do this conversion for very little cost (miserable Scotsman) and since I have recently pioneered the 1 pot Fiesta Mk I calipers conversion on my Mini (great brakes and st...

You need to get the rotating assembly in top condition - and fit cam bearings in the block. Fit a crankshaft damper, and lighten the flywheel as much as possible. Then look for a 300 degree camshaft (the old BMC 649) although there are more modern versions about - usually some on ebay. Fit this with...

Disc brakes please !
Advice wanted on the best way to get disc brakes on the front wheels. And no thank-you, I don't want marina hubs and wheels ! Will Spridget or Spitfire front hubs with discs fit the Minor stub axle ? If I can get the discs on there I will be able to match up calipers ok.
