Re: The awful joke thread
Prince Charles was visiting Cornwall and took a tour of Geevor mine, near Pendeen. After being shown around by the mine captain, Charles asked him, "How many men work here then?" Came the reply, "Aw, 'bout 'alf ov 'em, I s'pose!

If it was working OK before then I wouldn't touch the sender arm - why would that have changed?

Re: Engine dies but restarts easily
Well, if you are 'flying blind' then I would at least swap the rotor, as hinted at by 'liammonty'. I once had similar intermittent problems which turned out to be the rotor arm breaking up.

".......and some had new cars their parents paid on finance."
My, how times have changed! I had to pay my parents for my first car - £100 - I bought it off them when they got a new one.

Re: Alternators
You say it all worked fine before the belt broke. You also say you previously had problems starting the car due to a flat battery and that the battery only shows 12.1v when revving the engine. So it wasn't all fine before the belt broke, otherwise the battery wouldn't have gone flat - I suspect a fa...

"Look at their attitudes to open fires / log burners and it's not as if everybody has one of those these days." Mike, I'm totally with you on that. Banning house coal is just a tokenistic, easy, political gesture which will have such a minimum impact (due to the minority who have coal fir...

It only over-reads? I should be so lucky - mine under-reads and then over-reads repeatedly every couple of seconds....and the oscillations get wilder the faster I go!

Re: Which coil?
"My concern would be knowing that it was reliable if it was second hand?" You might well have the same concern about a modern one - as many have experienced! A good, old coil (which can be tested) is often as described by 'ManyMinors' - reliable and giving long service. Like many things n...

Re: Which coil?
I would trust Distributor Doctor, based on the quality of his ignition parts. But another option is to source a good, old, 'proper-job' coil which would probably be cheaper AND of superior quality.

Re: Regular engine runs during winter storage?
It is best to run these cars regularly* - that is what they were made for. Even if you don't want to use it much in winter, going for a run on fine, dry days every few weeks will prevent things seizing up and is much better for the car than periodically leaving it idling on the driveway for half an ...

Re: Which one is original
Yes, my SII has that type of wheelbrace/hubcap remover. Its poor as a wheelbrace, but good at removing hubcaps . But the starting handle is certainly better, as it has a sleeve over the end which you hold, so that the handle rotates in the sleeve as you crank the engine over.

Re: Checking Coil Connections are correct
Of course, some coil terminals are marked +ive and -ive. In such cases the +ive terminal is wired to the dizzy if the car is +ive earth, and vice-versa if the car is -ive earth.

Re: Engine dies but restarts easily
I don't know why they moved the coil from the bulkhead, where it was positioned at an angle a short distance below the control box, to above the dynamo during SII production. I suppose there must have been a reason........

Great news that she has fired up! It is entirely possible that the dynamo has previously been polarised to a negative earth state, and the battery connections suggest this to have been the case.

Re: Disconnected wiring
Most likely that is negative earth, if the battery is connected up as you describe, with the coil wired up the wrong way round. A clue would be - has it an alternator as opposed to dynamo? An alternator would strongly suggest negative earth. Wire your new coil up with the -ive terminal going to the ...
