Re: Wipers Want to Work but Wont.

Sam Charlie's question needs to be answered first, before the "next course of action " can be discussed. In the meantime however, the brushes are worn but not to the stage where you need to worry. When they get very near the metal holders ...that's the time to change them.Although not pictu...

Re: Pickup restoration part three

David I would have put a generous helping of copper grease on the handbrake cable end and the clevis pin and split pin to discourage the rusting process ( from all the muck and water that get thrown up underneath ). A smooth efficient brake operation on the vehicle is conducive to happy and safe mot...

Re: Pickup restoration part three

David Not being familiar with pick ups but is it anything to do with the rear number plate light ? You would need a reasonable length to get you from the bullet connector block ( for rear lights ) to the centre or one side of the tailgate for the number plate, hiding/ clipping the cable inside the r...

Re: Pickup restoration part three

David Yes- under the pick up.Down to the transmission tunnel, left of the engine looking to the back, over the gearbox cross member, to the back. You should find metal tangs on the underside, to hook the loom over, as you go. Don't bend the tangs tight until you know the positioning is spot on.I'm no...

Re: Just to introduce myself

Hi Welcome to the forum. Telling everyone where you are located ( not you full adddress ) might prompt a " friendly local " , who has been there and done it before,to come around and offer advice. The car doesn't look too bad from the pictures posted...much worse examples have been seen......

Re: Pick up Restoration (Part 2)

David OoooH nasty. How much is left stuck in ,dictates your course of action. Options :- I'd certainly remove the prop from the pick up, it's easier to work on in vice/ work mate / bench with good light.Metal swarf generated by your extraction method is a danger. Either a blob of grease, removed...di...

Re: Battery puzzle - 35Ah vs 45Ah?

Your dynamo is still going to "work" at the same rate, whenever the Battery "needs topping up ". The bigger the Battery, the bigger the " reserve/ store " of electrical power.....i.e.doesn't need topping up so frequently as a smaller Battery. I'm firmly in Mike's camp o...

Re: Running badly when hot

Roy's mantra is "it's never the coil " but seeing if it is overheating is easy to check, by touch. Sounds electrical to me so check the intregrity ( clean connections, no breaks or damage ) of :- supply wire to the coil from the loom low tension wire, white with black trace, coil to distrib...

Re: bare metal or not to bare my metal?

Paul What ever you are using to strip the paint, wire brushing ( on a drill/ angle grinder ) , a strip and clean disc or paint stripper, it pays to clean the metal thoroughly.Get the primer on asap or you will turn your back and surface rust will start appearing again. Meths, panel wipe or cheap thi...

Re: got the rust off.. now how to make the damage vanish?

James Can I suggest getting hold of a copy of Haynes Car Bodywork Repair Manual form your library. It's got a section entitled " Repairs on a shoestring " which covers all the spraying at home with an aerosol tips.Plenty of pictures for the novice. Take your time...preparation and care is e...

Re: windscreen wipers - are they supposed to be ineffective?

Simon The wiper action will never be as effective as a modern Eurobox but...... Is there plenty of " spring " left holding the wiper blades against the screen. The actual springs in the arms may be weak if they are orginal.Hold the arm an inch off the screen and let go.Does it return with a...

Re: Side window removal

Prepare yourself for a lot "ifs" in the response. If the side window was installed correctly from the outside ( rubber eased around the apperture from inside the car ) It should have two metal clips to hold the glass in.Clip position is half way up the vertical on the straight edge and a s...

Re: tough screws.. really tough screws

James Plus Gas is my favourite dismantling fluid, applied and left overnight ,if possible to do it's work. ( WD40 is a poorer substitute, it's more a water dispersant/ lubricant ) Spraying from underneath the car would be the most effective way to hit the threads. Inside the car An impact screwdrive...

Re: irrational indicators.. now slow indicators

James "Flashing too slow " could be...wrong wattage bulbs, very bad contacts at bulbs, old and worn wiring with too much resisitance or faulty wiring, a faulty flasher unit. In your shoes, I'd check the contacts at the bulb holders first and then work through the wiring system.Remove bulbs ...

Alec's aadvice is spot on. A flat bar of brass ( not so cheap these days, if you have to pay it ) clamped behind the welding area will act as a heat sink and cut down distortion. Note ..I said cut down , not elminate..so follow Alec's advice, move about. The same can be said for "dressing down t...

Re: something serious...

Using an off cut of wood as a scraper is unlikely to damage the metal.
WD40 is good at removing the remnants of sticky labels, so a quirt on an old rag might help in the final stages.
Meths... as a final clean.. on a rag, for a squeaky clean surface.
