Sir Jackie might be impressed!!
I have a book on driving, written by the great Sir Jackie Stewart, in which he outlines an exercise whereby people have to retain a tennis ball, in a bowl on the bonnet, whilst driving (I seem to recall in a figure of eight). I have also seem film of this. On Wednesday, I needed to go to get a presc...

Re: All accessories going smarter now
Yes and in a short while there is an "Upgrade" and your device will no longer work, because some spiv wants to sell you a new one; it's legalised vandalism  . As an example, I never download "Updates" for my printer and not just because of using non OE ink. After a certain ...

Re: underated 1098?
So long as you remember that the Triumph is long stroke and make sure the crank end float is OK (Quality control could be hit and miss), they are OK (Jigsaw Racing ran them up to 8000 :o :o ). They gave more trouble in Midgets, due to poor oil cooling. I've not put a rod out in nearly forty years; ...

Re: Engine rebuild
I've had two heads done by http://www.peter-burgess.com/ . Both work well (The last time, the people at the rolling road commented in it) and Mr Burgess is very helpful.

Re: underated 1098?
WO Bentley said there is no replacement for displacement, so perhaps the 1275 is the ideal compromise. I know MGB engines have been fitted but it's not easy and I think the weight distribution is upset. I've driven 1098 cars and they seemed to go along well enough. The later 1098 Midgets went quite ...

Re: dual circuit brakes
I had a couple of VWs, that split diagonally and I remember they did it that way from the start. My late model MG Midget and my mother's BGT are, like my last two Minis, split front/rear.

I scanned this, recalling this thread and then saw that it was concerning gold seal colour. However, having scanned it, it may be useful to some!!

Re: dual circuit brakes
I took the attached photo some years ago. The pedal box and pedals of a Marina had been fitted. Not sure if I will ever get around to doing this and I'd want it to be a tidier job. Of course the handbrake is a kind of dual circuit.

Re: Marina diff drain plug
Rather than start a new thread, is the Marina axle compatible with the Minor? In other words, are the half shafts the same size (Wheel size different but not sure on wheel stud PCD)? My car has standard half shafts and whilst I don't do quick starts, it has 77bhp, not the 48 it had when it was new. ...

Re: Safety in mind
Not see this topic before. I don't think a battery isolater has been listed but well worth it. Having been present, when something shorted out, does it all go up fast (I was lucky to have a wire cutter on hand)!! Most cut outs are bypassed with a fuse, that blows if a high loading is put on it. I re...

Re: Adderley Park Built Minor's
I found an invoice, dated 1991, which includes a car alarm. There is no mention of a conversion to negative earth and the alarm would have been based on negative earth. I have never had a car alarm (Had an immobiliser that failed and was removed; most of my anti theft devices are known to me only) a...

Re: Adderley Park Built Minor's
My Traveller (1293704F) is negative earth and I understood this was normal for late cars. I have a file of invoices, from when the car was new and there is no mention of it having been converted to negative earth. Were any late Minors built with negative earth and if so, from what point (I know Adde...

Re: 2nd gear crunch
My 1275 Midget has a similar box to the 1098 Minor and I often find it better to select 2nd before first or reverse (When at rest), neither of which have synco. Not having the slow running set too high also helps.

Re: 2nd gear crunch
If your gearbox is original, it will have the smooth case. The syncromesh isn't so good as on later 1098 (Ribbed case gearboxes). People sometimes use second, rather than change into first, since to change into first, on the move, requires you to double de clutch. You could try that to ease your gea...

If you have a good sample, a spectrometer can be used to make a match. I wonder whether British Motor Heritage would know?

Re: Annual Insurance Fun.
I think it is all because modern insurance companies use a standard computer system that has no box to tick for classic cars like ours. Every minor on the road, including mine, has been modified but the youngsters filling in the forms have no concept of this...... Flow chart mentality, badly progra...
Re: Cameras
I have front and rear facing cameras on my bicycle (Following an incident where I had to defend myself against physical assault...successfully I might add) and I fancy that other road users are more aware of such things nowadays, as you don't see quite as many passing within inches, as you once did ...

Re: Fuel.
In the absence of knowing, best to play safe but cork gaskets (Along with many things) have been highlighted as problematic. Hopefully, given time, better understanding will be obtained and changes made but I think it best to avoid ethanol as much as possible and to take steps to combat it.
