Re: Stub axle removal
That's interesting. And on that point, I'm going the other route and have had a marina hub machined and purchased an appropriate size bearing to fit (30205). The oil seal as you point out would still be a problem (not fitted yet). So instead I'm fitting a different oil seal. Well we'll see, as said ...

Re: Stub axle removal
As far as I remember, you don't need the bearing spacer at all, once a marina stub axle has been fitted. I did have an 'upright' that had this very modification and as far as I recall, the hub bearing/oilseal assembly just bolted straight on.

Re: Angle grinder
I have a Black and Decker 100mm grinder circa 1987 and it has never let me down. Bought a cheap 115mm and it barely lasted 2 years with very minor use. I have since purchased a Macallister (115mm) and although it seems sturdy enough (thus far) the on/off switch is a bit clunky. If it lasts, then all...

Re: Need a bit of carb help
Is the carb new to this engine? If so, maybe the jet is seized. And might be worth checking if the float needle isn't jammed.

Re: Pistons - Scratching, still useable?
If the bores are good, it could be that the oversize pistons were second hand when fitted.

Re: HIF 44 Carburettor linkages
Just to clarify. Which screw have you used to adjust the 'idle' ? Is it the lower one that is close to the choke quadrant mechanism or the 'correct' one which is vertical and level with dashpot cover (you can only see the top of the screw head from the top and not the rest of the screw) If it's the ...

I have green carpets with red seats. Is this custom modified? Or should I try a bit harder, Charlie?

Re: Monoblock cleaning
Roy, That reminds me. I bought some hydrochloric acid, (to de-rust some car components) and accidentally spilt some on the patio. Came up as good as new. Apparently, the stuff is used for this very purpose, patios etc. It's meant to be diluted with water. However, it seems to be so volatile that I'm...

Re: 948cc vs 1098cc
Just felt I had to add one more thing to this thread. I drove my son's standard 948 today and yes quick off the line but very quickly runs out of puff. Needs a better head, cam and carb like mine has, at which point It becomes a completely different beasty. As said, it doesn't have as much low down ...

As you surmise BMC. Riley/MG/Wolseley have a smaller dish, 2.46cc and less. Well, according to the 'Morris minor modification manual, pg45'.

Thumbs up from me for the 948. It's a little 'rev monkey' which makes it much more fun.

Re: Mix & match clutch parts?
I fitted a 950 driven plate under a midget diaphragm cover plate. It was 1/2 inch smaller across the diameter but worked with no problems. And saved a fortune, as that's all I had. And currently I have a toyota driven plate under a standard 1098 cover.

Re: Crossmember renewal
I have a '180' gas mig and it runs with .8mm wire and I've never had a problem. Until..I tried .6mm wire and instant 'birds nest' wire jam. It happened a few times and so I just binned the wire. Interesting about using the gasless .9mm wire. Thick enough not to jam. I might give it a try if my machi...

If you do have to strip it, look out for a punctured float.

True that. There are quite a range of mgf alloys out there. You can also look at Herald, Spitfire and GT6 wheels. Usually 13inch though.

Re: My broken engine
It has kent 256 mild road cam. I'm trialling the set-up as is to see how it is on mpg and some motorway use. It does have flat top pistons hence, going with only 1mm skim after de-shrouding the inlet area. At a guess the compression ratio is about 9:1.

Re: My broken engine
Just to post an update. I re-fitted the 998 but dispensed with the 12G295 head (already sold it) and fitted a 12G202 head instead. Although, I did 'De-shroud' the inlet valve area of the combustion chamber with a Dremel and got it skimmed. Well, it goes very nicely (so far). No more 'clanking'. :) N...

From what I see it appears to be a Marina axle. I would presume that the front hubs are Marina discs also. In what way are the front hubs unusable?
