The original by-pass (according to the AKD3541) was the concertina type, but was superseded by the straight one....
Operational (expected life before failure) or cheapness considerations? We’ll likely never know….?
Does say both were rubber back in the dim past.

Re: LED Indicator help
Just for clarity. Those ‘ballast’ resistors would need to be across the LED, not in-line. In-line (series connection) would decrease the circuit current even further when actually it needs a shunt load (in parallel to the LED) to increase the circuit current to a level similar to the original bulb l...

Re: Can’t get my daughters car to start
As per MM, but please don’t discharge the battery too much by continually cranking the engine. If you do not get it started - and it is left with a discharged battery - two weeks would not do the battery any good at all. Automotive batteries need to be maintained at full charge - either by rechargin...

Re: Carb question
new points/gap) it's easier/best to do it out of the car Nope. Perhaps easier to actually reach and change parts but, if you think that altering the points gap is not going to affect the timing, you are mistaken. The points gap will definitely change the timing, particularly if you may be changing ...

Re: R.p.m. at 60 mph with 3.9 compared to 4.22
That simply demonstrates the errors that are possible/ If 1900rpm was correct for 30mph, 60mph should have bee 3800rpm. Alternatively, if the 4000rpm, at 60mph was correct, the 30mph should have been 2000, not 1900rpm an error of + or - 5%, so results within 10%? One thing you can say is that it was...

Re: Timing changing on its own
Tacho? Timing light? On some of my engines (the multi cylinder ones) one uses one of the plug leads to illuminate the flywheel timing marks. Works OK in dim surroundings. Was the best they had, back in the 1920s.

Re: Electronic distributors
I built a capacitive discharge electronic ignition system, back some 50 years ago. Built from discrete components and a transformer supplied by ETI magazine, as an inexpensive option, for the project it carried, over one or two editions. That worked fine, but still used the points as the trigger, ba...

Re: R.p.m. at 60 mph with 3.9 compared to 4.22
Simply reduce your ‘indicated’ speed to 3.0/4.22 times any indicated speed you care to choose. That is the way to compare (mainly) the difference to your hearing. A reduction in rpm at any given speed might not necessarily aid the health of your engine - the way it is driven is far more important - ...

Re: Engine Swap
I've had around a dozen ecoboost fiestas as company cars and the engine is brilliant, we've had ecoboost connects to over 200,000 miles with no problems as well. That does not actually tell me anything, without some considerable clarification. Are you telling us that individual cars have covered ov...

Re: R.p.m. at 60 mph with 3.9 compared to 4.22
It will, of course, depend on the rolling diameter of your wheels, too. Do remember, also, that speedometer readings are notoriously high, in comparison with the truth (the legal requirement of speedo accuracy is +10% and -0%). That, also depends on whether the gearbox and/or speedo head is/are orig...

Re: Engine Swap
Good point, as these engines are coming upto to 10 years old in theory the belt should be ok for 10 years but they are failing prematurely most likely due to wrong oil being used, but it's not a big issue to change the belt with engine on the bench, any engine that I would use I would give a freshe...

Re: Electronic distributors
I suggest you revert to the original Lucas distributor and standard points set up and see how the engine performs. You can then decide if there is any benefit in these "upgrades". Personally I like to keep things simple and as designed. Many will disagree. Many won't. Electronic ignition ...

Re: wiring in electric windscreen washer pump
And the original plunger type needs no wiring or electricity at all! A lot of engines were originally only started by the manual starting handle. Doesn’t mean that we never progress with technology. I started with a hand or foot pump for inflating tyres. Electric pumps were progress. Batteries were...

Re: 12G202 Head. Beyond salvage
I started with engines that only revved to a few hundred rpm - some only 300rpm up to a max 1200rpm. I fairly quickly progressed to 8 and 11 thousand rpm engines and car engines (red line up to about 6500rpm). My valve grinding gear (stone based) was bought over 40 years ago and I now have a few cut...

Re: wiring in electric windscreen washer pump
It will be wired from the pump to the switch and from the switch to a suitable live supply. I am guessing the pump is at earth potential via its mounting to a metal surface. Personally, I think I might insert an in-line fuse in the live feed - especially if it was connected direct to the battery.

Re: 12G202 Head. Beyond salvage?
Just as another couple of asides. I never fit the rad cap - if at all- tightly, until after the head had been re-torqued. A small precaution (and as far as I know, never required), but just another point of being on the ‘safe’ side if ever there was a possible issue. I always attempted to loosen the...
