Your the man Willie, I've just unearthed the passage from the manual that I mentioned in my last post and it does indeed talk of longitudinal anchorage. My apologises to Ray for any misinformation I have given. Cam seems to have observed the same as myself though with regards to judder, perhaps this...

I have heard this one before Willie, about the reason for said cable, but have maintained that the engine and gearbox rubbers would have to be well shot to allow the inch or so movement before hitting the rad, and whenever I have experienced judder in reverse, invariably this cable had broken, with ...

The wire cable connecting the rear of the gearbox to crossmember is quite important in stopping juddering in reverse. It should be tightened to give just slight tension. Whenever I have refitted the head steady, being 'telescopic' it can be lengthened or shortened and therefore made to fit the dista...

I hope the bend at the front of the pipe is ok when your man fits it, i've had no luck at all with the two systems that I bought. Both fouled where the pipe goes through to the engine compartment. The first one wouldn't fit, so I started to alter it, big mistake! Tightening the bend prevents the sys...

I've always taken the Red goo to be the set hard one, didn't realise there was Brown, the Blue one is none hardening and feels more 'sticky' IMO. I started using the White silicon type after the local Austin/Rover dealer said that they were getting too many cars returned to the workshop with oil leak...

Thanks Willie, I'm going to cut down and re-thread the original 'long' studs so will work on 1 1/4'' from block, I have noticed the new gasket is not as substantial as the original, a lot narrower around the outside, I usually use a smear of silicon on gaskets, with good results. Gasket for housing ...

Spin-on filter

Hello, I could well be the last person here to do this conversion, ie: change from paper element to spin-on filter, however I've got the housing ,gasket and filter but can't, as yet, find the shorter studs that screw into the block to hold the housing, the next plan is to make a couple but would lik...

poly bushes

I read a post here a while ago about polyurethane bushes for the front uprights rear springs etc, I wondered if anyone can tell me if the different colours of these bushes are indeed to indicate various degrees of hardness or just a product of different manufacturers? If the former is the case, whic...

Thanks to all, I have finally managed to free the clutch using the method Willie suggested although it took about 10 minutes of revving and hitting the brakes, I can't understand it being so tough. Yes Cam, I was starting to think that something was broken and it would be an engine out job, but a co...

Thanks Cam & Willie, I,m still having trouble. I have tried driving the car, but without a quiet road to play on I've had to be quite restrained. I have not tried the starting handle trick I do not want to chance the crankshaft pully nut overtightening despite the lockwasher. I will try the jack...

Sticking clutch,

I was so pleased with my moggie this afternoon, I had not used the mog for about 3 months, turned the key and it started! There was a smell of petrol which turned out to be a leak where the carb to pump pipe was clamped at the pump end. When I trimmed the pipe the rubber under the braiding was quite...

Hello mm16
The a+ has ribbing on the block as part of the casting, the a is plain in comparison, the metro engine, although A series, is used transversly, therefore is unsuitable without a lot of modification at the flywheel end.

There you go again t72. The term 'adjusting tappets' is generally recognised as meaning to adjust the valve clearance by most people, rightly or wrongly. You expect too much of us mortals t72, and you are rather cheeky to say you have told us of our error before! Maybe at one of your lectures, but n...

I believe some people adjust tappets with the engine running, although I have not gone that far, I have checked the clearance that way. It's suprising how you can still feel if the clearance is tight or loose.

plug cleaner

Has anyone any info on spark plug cleaners, these used to be sold for use with compressed air or electrically driven, they contained grit that was agitated around within a container that the dirty plug end was inserted, as in sand blasting (in minature) I haven't seen these for years and would like ...

hello T72,

Excuse me sort of 'highjacking' this thread, but before the site went down you mentioned a picture in the club mag showing incorrectly fitted brake shoes, I've been trying to find this item for quite a while now, could you please tell me the issue it was in and the page number.
