Re: Engine backfire

Didn't IslipMinor have a similar problem with localised overheating around one of the valves causing the valve to stick open?

He mentions something like that whenever we get onto thermostat and bypass-hose elimination discussions.

Re: Half shaft difference

The 'diff' is the same over all the models - only the final drive gear ratios changed.... Oh god, not another 'adage' of yours to live with. What happens when the chap (or anyone else for that matter) reads that and assumes that all diffs have the same ratios? You know what he means! Just like 'sho...

Re: Bottom Trunnion Thrust Washers

Regarding the slot in the end, I agree it wouldn't be necessary on assembly. But could be useful when dismantling! As you'll always find dirt on the exposed threads that stops the nut coming right off. The alternative is double-nutting the other end to stop it turning. Are you sure the new pin you'v...

Re: 948cc with big bore?

If you want to keep the sound, but have it louder. Buy a new 'standard' stainless system. Bolts straight onto the standard manifold, and will certainly be louder than the sooted-up system on at the moment. A new one will still quieten down with time as it gets more and more sooty inside.

Re: Parking at Shows

It's a risk you take! I've never had any problems at shows, or even when parked on the street at night. My biggest worries being the things that don't even need tools for - late front sidelight/indicator lenses that just twist off, and the non-locking fuel cap. Amazed I never had any urchin piddle i...

Re: Gears too short, new rims

If the tyres are 5% smaller than originally intended, then your top speed will be 5% lower. So where you would have been doing 60 before, you'll be doing 57 now. So not a great deal really.

Re: Electric Fans

Yes, I had to do that when I fitted a Kenlowe. Reversed the polarity to make it suck from the engine side.

I then joined the wires with spade connectors on one wire and bullets on the other, to ensure I got the polarity right every time in future.

Not all of them. When you come to download the app it should tell you whether it needs internet access or not. What sort of apps are you after? I've got a few simple ones - unit converter, torch, etc. That don't require internet access. You should be able to use your own common sense in most cases a...

If you have 'wifi' in your home, you can connect to that with a smart-phone to download apps. If you don't have wifi, there are plenty of places that do for free. Mcdonalds is one ;) If you're planning on buying a handset and using your existing PAYG sim, just go to the shop of the network provider ...

Re: distributor problem

The red wire from the electronic ignition should go to the + side of the coil, and the black wire from the electronic ignition should go to the white wire with a black trace. That white wire with black trace then goes onto the - side of the coil.

Re: Morris Centenary Car Badges - not fit for purpose

It's besides the point! The badges were designed to go on the front of cars, and other enamel badges get along just fine! So what if it is hydrocarbons? They're still not fit for purpose!

I get mine from the David Manners Group (aka Morris Minor Centre Birmingham), as it's close by. I know you're the opposite side of birmingham to them, but if you ever pass that way (J2 M5) it's worth popping in!

Nowt wrong with the coil position. That's normal for such an early car.

Re: Rear lamp alloys

You can sand and fill them, and then paint them body-colour, silver, or even try 'chrome paint'.

If you're likely to replace them otherwise, it's worth playing about with them to see if you can get away without buying replacements!

I've never had any problems with manifold gaskets. But never come across a 'paper-thin' one either! All the ones I've seen have at least had some metal reinforcing layer within it.

I have just taken off some 185/70 R14's that were on 5.5J minilites on my minor. https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc3/284719_10150730226795585_7071966_n.jpg I had originally lowered it 1.5 inches with lowering blocks at the rear, but when I put the 185/70's on, I had to raise it 10...
