Re: 1953 (March) Series II Restoration
The other day, I again tripped over the rear axle casing that I had left on the floor after the internals were removed. (The first photo shows the initial dismantling of the rear axle). It and other 'chunky' rear suspension parts were supposed to be sent off to the blasters months ago but never went...

Clayton - your post made me smile.
After the chemical paint strip there is no ‘protection’ to the bare steel so I opted for a temporary coat of red oxide primer whilst I carry out metal repairs.

Re: MM Split Case Rear Axle - Bearing Replacement
Sounds like a good idea Paul, I hadn’t thought of that.
However, I made contact with the Morris Register over the weekend with my query and they came back to me immediately informing me that they have the bearings in stock.
I’ve ordered two and they are on their way!

MM Split Case Rear Axle - Bearing Replacement
I currently have my axle broken down so I can inspect parts and overhaul before building up and re-installing. I have all the parts I need with the exception of the 2no thrust bearings that carry the differential cage, which I am having trouble tracking down. None of the more high profile suppliers ...

Re: 1953 (March) Series II Restoration
. I've had some time now to look at the Morris and have decided to start the shell restoration from the back, working forward. The car had a minor accident many years ago which has caused the boot floor and bottom of the boot lid aperture to buckle after a rear impact. I don't think it was ever repa...

Ha ha Pete, it’s a no go I’m afraid. The Minor isn’t long enough to accommodate. Don’t ask me how I know.

Re: 1953 (March) Series II Restoration
Hi Folks, I am back and restarting the work on my restoration project. My excuse for not posting is as follows - I thought, (way back in mid January) it would be a good idea to sort out my other project's many oil leaks whilst the Morris was away being dipped and stripped. The Morris came back earli...

Re: Pointed Wing Bolts
Replacement wing bolts arrived this morning from ESM and I am pleased to say look pretty much spot on replacements. I've ordered the bolts for just one side of the car at the moment (front and rear wings) and have noticed there are 4no 'longer' bolts in the packages. I can see that two of the long b...

Re: Pointed Wing Bolts
Thanks for coming back to me geoberni but I am after the 'pointed' wing bolts as in this photo.
The pointed ends are visible in the engine bay and boot. I have some second hand ones but not enough.

Re: 1953 (March) Series II Restoration
Best way to store loose body panels and create more room in the garage is to temporarily bolt them back onto the shell.
I've started to use my 'Sharpie' on the car now that it is all one colour to highlight areas of further interest.

Pointed Wing Bolts
Just wondering if the 'pointed' wing fixing bolts are available 'new' anywhere?

Re: 1953 (March) Series II Restoration
Areas that do need attention are as follows - Pinholes in the flat panel by the driver's A post. I will be patch repairing this as the rest of the area is sound. The lead filler to the rear body section disappeared in the hot part of the process but I am looking forward to having a go at lead loadin...

Re: 1953 (March) Series II Restoration
The bodyshell and external panels have come back from Enviro-Strip (GB) Ltd., today and all of the body parts treated are now sporting a rather bright red oxide primer coating for protection. The process is very 'aggressive' in it's nature in order to get rid of any rusty metal present but I am conf...

Thanks David, I thought it was something like an axle breather and as you say essential to keep open to stop pressurisation of the early diffs.

Re: 1953 (March) Series II Restoration
Hi Mike, You can see in the above photos that I have the diff on the bench. I have removed the bearings it runs in as they are worn and will be replaced. I thought I would just include a few illustrations from the MM manual regarding possible maintenance works to the split case axle so you can see h...

Re: 1953 (March) Series II Restoration
I can’t answer the question officially Mike but I can think of a couple of reasons. This axle should be seen as being the ‘end of the line’ in terms of Morris development. It’s design was carried over from the Morris Series E which in turn used this design in the pre war Morris version and possibly ...

Re: 1953 (March) Series II Restoration
. The rear axle put up a good fight but I have managed to break it down as far as I want to go. The pinion gear teeth looked good and their roller bearings sounded smooth and quiet so I didn't see the need to replace them or dismantle further. I will be fitting a new pinion seal however as that was ...

Re: Series 2 rear screen pitting and edge nibbling.....
From my experiences Steve is correct. Someone has used an angle grinder inside the car as some point and the hot sparks flying off the disc have literally melted themselves into the surface of the glass. These particles will never come out of the glass unfortunately. If only the person responsible h...
