Re: MOT Pass!

No need to redo the wheel alignment though :-) I stand to be corrected, but my understanding is that ALL of the gaitors available for Minors specifically (obviously not NOS) are from the same source, and thus are rubbish.

Re: MOT Pass!

As Taupe said, the Bailcast ones are great, and you don't need to disturb the track rod end to fit them either.

Re: rear lights/indicators in a pre '62

The flashing brake lights on the transition cars are rubbish, as they are hard roses and they cause confusion (many folks on the road aren't terribly bright!!!). On our 1962 car, I added indicators on little brackets that drop down from the rear bumper mounts. They're discrete, but much more visible...

Re: 1958 traveller with 1098 engine

DM2 were also fitted to 948 cars up till near the end of production I think, so it could be the car's original distributor. It's just an older type that was superseded by the 25d. 25d looks like the dm2 and you'll be able to use same style cap, leads etc., whereas 45d looks quite different.

Re: Footman james/Towergate, thanks!

What is a shame is that Dave so often has to jump in to help members due to incompetent and inconsistent staff, who don't in many cases know their product, and are unwilling to help. This is a generalisation, but was the case for me and for many others. The fact that the 'club' insurance product (a ...

Re: Motor oil?

The E actually has an S in front of it - SE, SF, SG etc. in general terms, a higher letter means a better spec, I.e. SF is better than SE and so on. The S spec refers to petrol engines and the 'C' to diesel specs. There is an absolute mass of info available on the internet if anyone is really that i...

Re: Ignition

Could be caused by so many things. Presumably you checked the timing after fitting the accuspark, as it will be different to the previous setting with points. I wouldn't just 'advance it'. Make sure it's in the right ballpark first, then you can fine-tune it.

Re: A Transmission related poser for you.....

Crazy - it just breaks at the other end instead! Unfortunately, bad design and poor quality is all too common in the modern parts. However, it's not as though the updated shafts are cheap!

What's my prize then - a pair of second-hand updated half-shafts?!

Re: A Transmission related poser for you.....

I have heard of the toughened half shafts breaking at the hub end before, I.e.the shaft itself doesn't break - the weak point is where the shaft connects to the cap that bolts to the hub. Could have broken there?

Re: Timing

Next time, put a reference mark on the distributor and clamp so that you can put it back to where you started! For what it's worth, I've never been able to hear pinking from my standard cars when timing is well advanced - I think maybe there just isn't enough compression. To get timing back in the b...

Re: smiths round heaters

Yes, that's the 'fresh air' duct they fitted to later 948 cars - pull the knob out to open the duct. It won't stop the heater from working if it's blocked though, as you get next to no ram effect from it. I suspect it's either a gummed up matrix, or a blockage coming out of the head, maybe in the ta...

Re: smiths round heaters

They're fine if working right. There's no intake flap though, so don't spend too much time looking for that - it's a recirculating heater (if car is a late948 then it may have a fresh air inlet close to, but not connected to, the heater, but this won't affect heat output).

Re: removing brake light switch

I don't think it's specifically a dodgy batch. They are all utter junk and seldom last over a year in my experience. I've just fitted a second-hand 50 year-old one as it's better than the new junk. This would be an excellent one for the club to look in to - as brake switches are a fairly safety crit...

Re: Brake upgrade

While you're at it, make sure all the cylinders are working properly. It's not uncommon to have one on each side at the front stuck; the car will still pull up straight and could potentially get through the MoT, but the brakes would be hopeless. Genuine cylinders are only about £15 each, and they're...

Re: test drive inspection etc Q

Fumes in the car are unfortunately not uncommon in a traveller, due to a combination of exhausts that are an inch or two too short, and back doors that don't seal too well. I would be surprised if that isn't the problem. Regarding drivetrain longevity, you ought to be able to expect 100,000 miles be...
