Re: rear susspension

Oddly, I just did one yesterday on a car! 1960 2 door saloon, new springs and bushes. was a bit trickier as the owner wanted these anti tramp bars fitted at the same time. It is a straightforward job though, just support under the body and do one side at a time. Order a complete set from ESM (or oth...

Re: Tyre sizes

145/14/80 is the best currently available choice.

It is a shame that 135 tyres are no longer available as my Traveller steered exceptionally well with 135's on the front.

Re: Pitted panels - how to deal with them

The best way is to get the bonnet media blasted by a company that is used to blasting car panels, i.e. low pressure and wont distort the panel. I would then paint the panel with a couple of coats of Brantho Korrux Nitrofest, which is a rust retardant high build primer. If you have to resort to wire ...

Re: Weld dressing

If you get a small pin hole or gap in your welding the best way to fill it is with more weld! Just a spot of weld. To dress welds down I use a grinder with an abrasive flap wheel, for tight spots a small air belt sander or die grinder with a carbide burr. Then prime the welded area and seam seal bef...

Re: Etch primer - overpainting

Yes you can use normal primer over etch primer with no problems. BUT, if the metal surface has scratched on it, especially scratches you can feel, high build primer will not disguise these. You will need to do more prep, sand the area before etch priming with 80, then 120 then 180/240 grit paper to ...

Re: HOW DO I REMOVE THIS BOLT?

The drop link is held in with a castellated nut (5/16 Whitworth head, BSF thread) and a split pin. Looks like the split pin has corroded away so you will need to find the hole and drill it out or use a socket and hope it snaps th pin and the nut undoes, then drill out the hole for a new split pin. A...

I know of a few folks who have Minor LCV's. I hope you are paying the industry standard of £100 per day for filming plus expenses????

Re: Help with Main Beam PLEASE !!

Take the bulb out and test the terminals on a battery, (from memory so forgive me if wrong) facing headlamp, left terminal is earth, top is main beam and right is "normal' headlamp.

It is possible for main beam to burn out and the low beam to still be working on a sealed beam unit.

Re: Blown head gasket - best replacement?

Once again BMC trots out the old bad advice! But 15 thou will if anything make the situation worse with unleaded as the exhaust valve will be open for less time causing the hot exhaust gasses less time to get through the port. Thus increased pressure and more heat and possibillity of damage. Best to...

Re: Blown head gasket - best replacement?

Limping home a couple of miles won't have done any harm, Just get your mechanic to check the head and block with a straight edge between 3 and 4 to make sure. You might have an over heating problem in the block to to silting up of the waterways if the coolant wasn't changed every couple of years and...

Re: Cheapest source of motor oil (with API number) I have found

Interesting, what API rating does the "Daytona " have??

By the way, there is no debate. If you use a non rated oil on anything but an already knackered engine you are asking for trouble!

Re: Alternator replacement leading to engine failure?

Check that the oil and water haven't mixed. When you were driving with the ignition light on did you check the fan belt was still driving the water pump? If the water pump wasn't turning then the engine could have overheated leading to cylinder head gasket failure. If the C.Head Gasket is ok check ...

Re: Alternator replacement leading to engine failure?

You could also have the ignition and oil pressure lights the wrong way round in the speedometer. Hence it was the oil pressure light that was on.
