Re: 1098 low compression Vs. high compression
smaller carbs are fine if you want it to purr and have best all round driveability - bigger carbs if you want ultimate horsepower... IMHO, (based on experience). Interesting, I'll take that on board, I guess there is only one way to find out which I will prefer. I can always change it back later...

Re: 1098 low compression Vs. high compression
Don't get carried away with HP numbers, the Americans have a saying that covers it " You buy horsepower but drive torque" An engine with grunt is much nicer to drive than one where you have to rev the life out of it to get some oomph. exactly why i don't like the LC engine I've got, it re...

Re: 1098 low compression Vs. high compression
270 is too much for a 1098 - simply because it must not be revved over 6000, and so loses some at low revs but can't use the high revs capability. The standard AEA 630 cam works well - and 'lugs' nicely from low revs even with the 940 head - and against the mumblings of the doomsters who witter on ...

Re: 1098 low compression Vs. high compression
Thanks for the advice BMC, I think I'll probably leave the camshaft stanard, as I don't want to go too far from a stock engine that I can revert to if I don't like the setup. I've got a HS4 already which is ready to go, I'll saw off the exhaust section of a stock manifold and then fit the HS4 to a s...

Re: 1098 low compression Vs. high compression
The real problem is the hopeless tiny twin carbs - and the general state of the engine. Go HC with the 940 head (sink the valves slightly i you need to) and a good HS4 (or HIF38) carb on a good alloy inlet. You won't be disappointed. I only have a single HS2  . Just as I thought, I'll go 12G9...

Yep I know that, although it supposedly looses the engine 5bhp too...mike.perry wrote:The only difference is the dished pistons

1098 low compression Vs. high compression
Hi All, I've got a little bit of a conundrum for you, basically I've been getting a little bit fed up with my low compression 1098 I currently have fitted to my 4 door saloon, it's currently running with a 12G940 head and HS2 carb. Sadly it doesn't feel quite as spritely as any of the other cars in ...

Re: What are the prices for an mm
If we're talking about Lowlights I'd say they start at about £900, you wouldn't get much for less than that. However some good projects go for about £2000+ . Restored they go for atleast £4000 even if they're unoriginal.

Just as I was thinking, good planchrisryder wrote:Or bolt the front good bit and the rear donor bit both to the inner wing. Then you've got the bonnet and door to help you follow the lines.

Re: 1950 Saloon project
That seems like quite a good idea David, what did you do to ensure the wing was the correct shap afterwards ?DAVIDMCCULLOUGH wrote:I had to cut up a couple of good later wings to fix the back of my lowlight wings, seemed a shame to do this but was much easier than trying to make the complicated shape by hand.

Re: 1950 Saloon project
A but more progress to report, the remaining two wings have been removed revealing some holes. It isn't that bad really, just the ususal rust traps. The front wings have also been 'repaired' in the past, so I've got a bit of a task to get them looking respectable. http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/...

Re: Introduction
I did a DVLA check and the results came up as being first registered in December 1962 so its right on the borderline of the two series of modern moggies as I understand. Having searched the net for rose taupe it does indeed look like that to me. (lots of dust though :S) and does the single tone int...

Well, rightly or wrongly the decisions been made. Crossplys it is!
Once she's back on the road I'll update you all on the differences in handling between 145s 155s and crossplys

Carpet colour for a romain green MM ?
Hi All,
I don't suppose anyone knows what collour the carpet should be for my 1950 romain green MM ? The old one was green, but I have read somewhere it should be brown, which one should it be ?
Cheers,
Will

Re: 1950 Saloon project
Well I've finally managed to crack on with this, Isadly it's a bit rustier than I'd hoped but nothing too bad :) I've got two wings off with the other two to follow, I will be repairing and refitting the front wings and replacing the rears with some correct highcut ones. The next job will be to get ...

Re: Crossplys or Radials
Well I'm still not decided on this, I've got a 4 door saloon on 155s and a convertible on 145s in my opinion 145s are far better.
the car that I'll be fitting them too is a 918 mog, so no ball of fire. surely it can't make that much difference ?

Nothing to do with me but might be of use to someone, it looks like it's an engine with a thermostat too...
