Re: 1098 compression test figures
Compression figures sound great. Nothing wrong with your technique either. Worn guides might eventually be the cause but eliminate everything else before making an appointment with Engine machine shop ! First of all you say it's running a bit rich. So check the timing first of all and the state of t...

Kate Kate you could try www.osc-chessington.co.uk . He painted my classic car , plus two for two of my best mates ( one owns a two door Morris Minor saloon !! ). All three were a " post restoration " complete respray. I know of three other cars including a classic Jaguar that were painted ...

Re: Restoration Advice needed
Dermot , I can see from this post and the others you have put on the Forum that whilst a Morris Minor is " new " to you , you cannot be considered a total novice. A catalogue from Moss Europe.co.uk , if you don't already have one already will be a useful reference source. The cross section...

Re: Fitting new door cards
Take the opportunity to inspect the door " internals " clean up as necessary and re-grease / oil as required. Make sure the drain holes are clear.Replace any missing door clips or ones that are too far gone with rust to salvage. After lining up the clips on the new cards , pinch a bit of V...

Donald How old is your battery? Are the posts and the clamps anything other than clean , i.e nice clean metal for a good electrical connection. Ditto ….if you have a quick release set up on the battery ? Can we pin you down a bit to help with the diagnosis please. When you turn the key to start up ,...

Well done on the progress so far. The more experience , the better the weld. It certainly worked for me , by the time I got " back to the start " on the car I realized that my first attempt was not quite up to scratch / new improved standard. I cut it out and did it again ! ( No reflection...

Re: SU carb float chamber not filling
The needle in the inlet valve should "move freely " with just the merest gentle touch of a finger. A slow motion upward flick of the finger should see it rise and fall immediately. If you're having to use a screwdriver to force it to move then it does need replacing. Take Phil's advice onb...

Sandun Referring to Burlen's diagram , see link http://sucarb.co.uk/su-fuel-pumps-spares/single-lp-pumps-kits/electric-fuel-pump-dual-polarity.html There are two gaskets that could be described as " diaphragm sized ". The item No 38 , nearest the base has 6 x holes for the fixing screws pl...

Re: Morris Minor 1000 (factory convertible) restoration
It looks as though the interior of the chassis legs need a good scrape out of loose rust flakes … to see "what you got ". The nearside one is looking a bit filly on the top inboard edge. Not clear from the photos as to whether the leg has had some attention in the past The shot inside the ...

Re: Morris Minor 1000 (factory convertible) restoration
Andy Welcome to the Forum. If you acquired the convertible for free ( " cost us nothing " ) you're a very lucky man. Time to buy the Lottery ticket I'd suggest ! The car certainly better than the average and it should make a nice little car when you've finished. Thanks for sharing the picc...

I guess a lot will depend on the general state of the door / window trim generally. Will you be having to replace any / all of the rubber seals / mouldings on the main window and quarterlight any time soon ? If you answer is yes , because of perished rubber , then a complete strip down is the only w...

Re: Clicking/knocking noise
Pete Replace the fuel filter first , if it's clogged up. It will certainly be strangling the supply of fuel to the carb and therefore be making the pump work harder. And it's cheaper than a new pump ! Give that a go. Opinions vary on the after market fuel filter application. My take is that it is su...

Pete , Do the test first and see what the result is. Can we assume that the car is 1098cc Negative earth ? Is it an original pump on the vehicle or has it been replaced at some time in it's life ? If original then unleaded petrol " may have done for it ". A new pump will have a diaphragm a...

Sandun, The picture you show appears to have an aftermarket set of points fitted. Of all the pumps I have seen / worked on none have had the tiny little metal tang. Burlen who sell original SU fuel pump parts don't seem to have this part include. Photo attached : - http://sucarb.co.uk/twin-point-roc...

Elliot , In any restoration you can never have enough diagrams of what goes where ! Different angles , different perspectives … they all help you to figure it out. Can I recommend , if you've not got one anyway, a free Morris Minor catalogue from Moss www.moss-europe.co.uk . I see that they are on I...
Re: Hub caps
I reckon for hub caps you can tell the difference (blind folded probably ) between an original and a new one by the weight alone. The older one will be thicker metal and therefore heavier. Get yourself a quote or two for re-chroming and then compare. If you have other stuff for re-chroming .eg. bump...

Re: Metal thickness
Unless you feel you have a real need for " gasless " , I would opt for gas MIG welding every time for car body work.Argon mix gas will deliver the cleaner weld. I wore out my old SIP gas / gasless Mig welder after 25 years and had to retire it after sterling service. I did replace it with ...
