Leaf Springs, five leaves or seven?
My '54 series II saloon still has its original seven leaf springs but in a very worn state. Not long after mine was made saloons changed to five leaf springs. What is the best option for replacement? Was the change an improvement or just for cheapness?

A glowing description and a hefty price for a car with incompatible gears, rust holes and I think you mentioned earlier needing paintwork as well. Sounds like a case for trading standards.

Re: Structural integrity
The original convertibles have extra strengthening plates to make up for the lack of a roof, on the a post, b post and sills each side, so six plates in all. These can be purchased and should be used on a conversion and if welded soundly they should be as good as an original. In the case of the cut ...

My son, who like all young people is an expert in all the mysteries of the inter web, will tell you that this is because Morris Minor owners operate in a different space/time continuum from the rest of humanity.

Re: No Ignition but Battery Fully Charged
I was told that modern batteries are ruined if they are left to go completely flat, even if they are not very old. This is unlike the older types which could be recovered with a slow charge. Don't ask me to explain the technicalities of it though.

When you have removed the four bolts at the rear of the shaft it can be folded down for clearance or pulled out from the gearbox as it is on sliding splines. If you remove it you will likely lose some gearbox oil, have a pan handy. The half shafts need to be moved outwards a few inches each side oth...

Don't apologise for asking, that's what we're here for! I'm pretty sure Mini and Marina wheels will fit, not sure about the others.

Re: engine swaps
The Minor has an 'a series' engine whereas the 1500 is one of the b series of engines which are not easily interchangeable. If the Minor engine needs to be replaced an a series of 1098 or 1275cc is the easiest replacement.

As you have an official document confirming its number and an intact chassis plate you should be able to get DVLA to register the vehicle with the original number, as long as it has not been transferred to another vehicle. I think this is called the v765 procedure. Full details are on the DVLA websi...

Re: Any thoughts on the brake cylinder seal kits of today.
A former owner I worked with advised the same regards fitting the master cylinder bolts back to front and packing them to clear the torsion bar. As you have to move the torsion bar to get the bolts out, here's a radical thought, why not put them back as they should be? :-? Probably better not to be...

Alternatively they could just make mirrors simple and cheap enough that no one wants to steal them in the first place.

I think the estimate given is not so much an assumption that The floors and sill will be good, more a ball park figure for the basis of the conversion, including the strengtheners which are included. Any and all repairs will no doubt be 'extra'.

Re: starter motor HELP
If the battery is good a slow starter can often be caused by poor earthing between the engine and body. The Minor should have an earth braid from the gearbox to the floor with good connections at both ends. I once resolved this on a very rusty Land Rover by running an extra earth from the engine blo...

The Midget has a narrower track than the Minor so you would need a diff rather than a complete axle. If on eBay it would be listed as for a Midget or a Wolseley 1500 and you can use the rest of the parts from a Minor axle.

Re: Where is the dipstick?
A neighbour with a large modern touched mirrors on a narrow road, not uncommon in rural areas. The new mirror, with heater, adjuster and indicator, cost over £300, plus several hours work to strip the door, fit and connect it. It then wouldn't work. The car had to be taken to a main agent and plugged ...

Returning to your axle picture, the lack of a rear filler shows it to be an early type. If you want a higher ratio it is best to get a complete 1098 axle. A 1098 diff will fit in an early casing, but then you would have the problem that neither has an oil filler!
