Elsewhere I've been advised to look out for old riveted linings as giving better brakes. Probably asbestos of course. Is there any truth in it? I was thinking of starting another topic on brake materials. When I was young and daft and we fitted clapped out Gold Star cams in our B32s and M20s and tho...

Today did some emergency stops (without the emergencies). From 40/45mph on smooth dry tarmac I can make the rear wheels just lock, which seems about right. But the fronts, while working well and straight, don't lock. On damp roads the rears lock but the fronts still don't. I'd expect to lock the fro...

Alas alack folks! Problem remains and I'd your further advice. Do about 18 miles and we get "cut, drive, cut, drive" with the car getting slower all the time. Now I've experienced it a few times I keep the speed down < 50mph and then it can be persuaded to level out at about 20mph, cool of...

Thanks Wanderinstar & TerryG for pointing out the advert on the Wolseley brake bits that I'd not spotted. Have bought them! (Thought I'd put in this note last night but its gone astray.) You know, this internet lark and the webby sites are (a) worth their weight in gold (b) an education and (c) ...

Sorry about the "boiling in oil" . Brane failure again. How could have I written that even when I meant something completely different? And then let it go out after reading it on the screen in front of me? Corr! MikeN.

Can confirm Willies point. Whenever I start or stop the engine my ballast light is on showing the points are closed and the coil passing current. Nice to know my troubles have added to the sunm of human knowledge! Also noticed that at night little spots of light appear thro' the radiator! I'm beginn...

Thanks for your comments. Re Citroens and their automatic load adjutments - yeah! I had a Xantia the best car I've had. Superb ride and brakes - until it went wrong and then what a cost! Re ColinP's comments, they've made me check when I last looked at the brakes and its coming up for 10k miles! I'm...

Corr! You're brave to suggest boiling brake linings in oil! But the gurus have been nice to you - admitting they've done it in their youth. Simmered for two hours in Persil will do the trick. 15k miles and two MOTs later mine're still doing the job and will lock up the brakes on a wet road. I'm surp...

Rear brake pressure limiter

Last night I had to brake my Traveller REALLY hard on a wet road as some idiot slowly pulled out a few cars up into the A3 traffic just south of the M25. By the time everybody had worked out what was going on we'd all used up our braking distances and things were desparate. Luckily he then shot off....

Ah! just realised that Mr Cam was refering to the resistance when hot. Good point! Will get it tomorrow and review the bulb wattage! Just remembered that on the box it says Aston Martin and Jaguar as applications (as well as boring Fiat and Citroen). Suppose they all have ballasts bypassed on start ...

Thanks for quick replies. Re Matt - who can tell if its oil filled and whether there's an air gap? So the answer is I neither know nor how to find out! Any ideas? So far am just trusting to the Prince of Darkness to be making a decent product! [Just realised that if I shake it can hear the oil shosh...

Ignition coil ballast resistor

Greetings Comrades! Much trouble in the rain yesterday on the A331 when the coil died. Its decided that when we do more than 20 miles it overheats and retires. Cool off for 5 minutes and off we go again. (But 5 minutes was a long time in the rush hour stuck the Dennis roundabout in Guildford last ni...

Sorryabout the spacing of the cold and hot words above. Cam's put me right elsewhere about how get gaps.
Cold test I get 160,160,149,150psi.
Hot test 145,150,140,140psi.
Tese were done with the throttle closed. I know Bmcecosse always says do it full throttle which sounds sensible.

Figures for compression. On my (I think) 1965 Gold Seal 1098 engine, which has done about 80/90k? miles and never had the head off, I get cold hot 160,160,149,150psi 145,150,140,140psi The last 42k miles have been lead free without additive. Regards, MikeN.

Kirsty,
Try pulling the choke out when you get your flat spot. If it goes better you'll know its weak at that point. One advantage of the SU is its "choke" is an enrichment device rather than the old fashioned true choke.

Cor! This don't half bring the jokers out, dunnit! But the idea of even an incomplete list is a good 'un and if it doesn't exist then a website like this seems to me the ideal place for it to be compiled. Could not a reference "bin" be constructed into which the types and dimensions of nut...

Bmcecosse, Wot you mean by high revs? I realise that 70mph at circa 4300rpm may be "poodling" that you, but its transonic to me! You put your finger on it - if they have the crankshaft damper on the later E-W 1098, should we as a precaution fit to the ealier N-S 1098? I'm trying to scaremo...

Just noticed that Screwfix are doing API-SL (which should satsify even Mr Cam!) for £6.99 for 4.5 litres or £6.24 each if you buy four. Handy if you buy building stuff from them and need to make up the total to reach the £45 minimum on free delivery! On page 470 of their cat. API used to be jealous ...

Bmcecosse,
Does the crankshaft damper make the engine feel smoother? ( I ask 'cos elsewhere a thread runs on sound deadening, and it may assist on noise reduction at high revs.) If so, wot vehcle(s) should I look for to get one and it is a straight fit? No fan belt line-up problems? Regards, MikeN.

Onne,
what sort of horses are those
They may not be many but they're BIG! Sure to be measured at the flywheel so you get as high a figure as possible. Thanks for advice (and to the Cam) MikeN.
PS first time I've done quotes. Thanks Relfy.
