Engine number interpretation

My 1968 saloon came with no history. I've Googled its engine no: 10V / 189E / H8818, and it appears to originate from a van with closed circuit breathing (it has a pipe from tappet chest cover to air cleaner, no breather outlet in rocker cover). Other listed van engine numbers state "low compre...

i feel that's a slightly negative view of the s 11 cars ,i know my one has got a 1098 engine and diff + 8'' brakes [ i have the original parts if i want it original ] and makes it perfectly useable , i am not sure about the '' inferior ''visibility problem or the heater issues , i feel they are mor...

Re: E10 fuel introduction

Lots of info if you search "E10 fuel in historic cars" on YouTube. And lots of different opinions! The USA seems to have been using E10 for some time, hopefully their classic car experts will have come up with some answers. I already use an unleaded replacement additive - if I have to use ...

Re: High speed pinking

We will remove the timing chain cover in the next few days and have a look. The noise is a regular even clang related to engine speed. It does not seem to occur unless the engine is under load. You can give a little bit of throttle at 70km/hr + and it starts. Lay off the throttle it stops. I also g...

Re: High speed pinking

Noise could be so many other things, maybe even something dead simple. Can you replicate the "pinking" by driving in 3rd gear under load at similar revs (just to prove it is indeed engine-related)? Could be any number of loose metal bits in engine compartment area vibrating at certain spee...

moggiethouable The reason I included the statement 'not to be tightened so as to remove play' was because there have been some suggestions on this forum reference taper bearings which put forward the proposal that taper bearings should be lightly torqued up and with no play in the bearings or at th...

Re: engine runs backward

If I am not very much mistaken, some two-stroke mini-cars had to be started with the engine running in the reverse direction when the driver wants to move the vehicle backwards. I think the Gogomobil is an example. Perhaps the Messerschmitt 3-wheeler?. Don In the late 1950s - early 1960s Bond Minic...

Re: Reducing noise in a Traveller

As Chipper says, one of the worst culprits is the inevitable general mechanical "looseness" and imbalance which comes with age - eg. propshaft, wheels, wheel bearings, engine mountings ( eg engine steady bar set under too much tension - I keep mine adjusted in a "relaxed" mode so...

Re: Swivel pin death-rattle

Thanks for the advice etc. The upper trunnion rubber bushes are certainly badly worn. Does anyone know if there would be enough play in the suspension leg's bottom trunnion bushes to lever the top trunnion rearwards free of the damper lever while leaving the lower one undisturbed ? (PS: Both ESM and...

Swivel pin death-rattle

My L/H front is making that familiar light/medium clack/clonk over poor road surfaces. I'm thinking of getting the complete swivel pin plus trunnions which are listed by several parts suppliers. In the past there were dark rumours of inferior swivel pins on the market. Does anyone know if there are ...

Re: Not the average misfire - SOLVED

This excellent thread inspired me to check my air filter (newly-purchased 1098cc, vigorous acceleration from low to middle revs but very sluggish beyond that). Filthy! And the main culprit was clearly oil-laden fumes from the engine breather pipe. I've torn some holes in the filter until I can fit a...
